Mulching garden beds, as well as around trees and shrubs, helps keep weeds out and soil at the proper moisture and temperature. Most common mulches are:

Shredded hardwood mulch, the most common form of mulch, is a by-product of lumber yards. As it decomposes, it provides important nutrients to your soil that increases the amount of micronutrients and worms in the soil.

Pine mulch comes in many forms: shredded and nuggets. This mulch is often called softwood mulch and increases the acidity of your soil. This mulch is especially good around azaleas, rhododendrons, and other acid-loving trees and shrubs.

Cedar mulch comes in three colors, red, black, and natural. Often used to create more landscape interest, universities studies have found that cedar mulch can kill odorous and Argentine ants and their nests.

Called the floatable mulch because of its porous nature, cypress mulch is great for hills and slopes.

On average, an artificial tree is used for 7 years before it is disposed of. So if a tree is displayed for 1 month/year, it will have served as a Christmas tree a total of 7 months while remaining in a landfill indefinitely. Even if it were to be used for 20 holiday seasons, it’s still going to end up in a landfill far longer. Live Christmas trees, however, are both a renewable and biodegradable natural resource. On average it takes about 7 years to raise a Christmas tree to marketable size. During that time, it is absorbing carbon dioxide and filtering the air of particulate matter and releasing oxygen. Live Christmas trees are also providing watershed protection and excellent habitat for songbirds and other wildlife.

Now is the time to check the branches of your Skip Laurel or Otto Luyken Laurel to see if you see this white on the branches. This is Peach Tree Scale and needs to be sprayed with All Seasons Horticultural Oil between July 1 and 15, and August 20 and September 15 if you have it.

Urban foresters treat a large green ash tree at Robinson High School to protect it from emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle. Treated trees stand a good chance of survival. Homeowners are encouraged to treat their ash trees to protect them from this insidious forest pest. Planting native tree species, such as pawpaw, river birch, and American holly, is another way to protect your yard from EAB.

Now and before the 4th of July is the time to prune your Azalea shrubs. If you're pruning them and you see what looks like white cotton on the branches, your azalea has Azalea Bark Scale and needs to be sprayed now and before July 4th to prevent damage to your shrubs. Pansies (Viola x wittrockiana) and their forerunners, violas, have always inspired thoughts of love and romance, especially for bards such as William Shakespeare. Other people, especially children, feel like they are looking into the face of nature smiling back when they gaze at the flower. Developed as a cultivar in the early 1800s, the pansy retained its edible qualities and is high in vitamins A and C. These are plants that like the cool weather. They’ll grow in fall, throughout the winter (though some freeze a little bit with the snow), and into spring until the hot summer months just melt them away. They can grow in full sun to partial shade. Make sure that you fertilize and mulch them so they can grow through the winter months.
