We're so grateful for organizations like Walden's Puddle!

This young red-tailed hawk came into our care after being found alone with no sign of parents for several days.

🦅 At this age, red-tailed hawks are still being fed by their parents while learning the ropes of hawk life - how to fly, hunt, and stay safe. Without that support, they can quickly become weak, dehydrated, and vulnerable to predators.

🕵️‍♀️ There are a lot of factors that go into deciding the best course of action for a young or possibly orphaned raptor: sometimes renesting is an option, sometimes it’s best to observe from a distance, and sometimes a trail cam can help fill in the gaps.

📞 If you’re ever unsure, the best thing you can do is leave the animal alone and call a licensed wildlife rehabber. We can help you determine what’s normal and what’s not.

They don’t always need rescuing.
They don’t always need intervention.
But every now and then, like this hawk, they really do need a helping hand to get their second chance.

Many birds enjoy eating jelly like orioles, grosbeaks, House Finches, mockingbirds, catbirds and some warblers. It mimics some of the fruits they eat in nature. Jelly, like any other bird food, should be offered responsibly.

Jelly should be as natural as possible. Bird-friendly jelly is best with its fruit and sugar. Avoid preservatives and other additives, especially sugar alternatives.

Too often, jelly is offered in wide bowls or the whole jelly jar is hung to allow birds to reach in to feed. These can create dangerous situations for birds, especially inquisitive hummingbirds.

We recommend small-cup jelly feeders to prevent bird’s bodies from contacting the jelly. Only provide a small amount of jelly each day so that the birds will consume it while it’s still fresh.
