Beyond Boundaries – Bali Retreat 2018

For my birth professional friends, here is a great opportunity for personal and professional development - CBI's Bali Retreat 2018. http://childbirthinternational.com/bali-retreat/ Amazing speakers, Sarah Buckley and Robin Lim, not to mention the exotic location! I’m a Trainer with CBI and sure wish I could be there, but since I am expecting again, not too keen on world travel with a wee one.

Six days in paradise! Join other midwives and doulas in Bali for a transformational experience. A birthworkers retreat like no other! You deserve it!

After reflecting on my relationship with my littles (and not so littles) yesterday, I decided to do two things: choose one thing I'd like to do better as a mom between now and next Mother's Day, but first give myself credit for what I'm doing well. You're invited to join me!!
Doing well: preparing nutritious meals
Could do better: intentionally making eye contact with my children. This means I'll have to limit the multi-tasking. Multi-tasking is overrated and exhausting. And 40 years plus 7 kids into life, I'm pretty lousy at it anyway!

Mother Culture #4 - Last thought on this topic I will share. One of the greatest benefits of learning to take care of ourselves, as mothers, is the restored energy and enthusiasm for life that surfaces. This renewal has led to a new sense of creativity and purpose for me in recent months and helped my children and identify a couple of activities that nurture us all - reading good literature aloud or taking nature walks/ keeping nature journals. What is something that you and your children can share for mutual refreshment and satisfaction? Here is the end goal of creating a Mother Culture, “…nurturing yourself on all levels – physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually – so you can live, love, and parent optimally.” - Renee Trudeau, A Mother’s Guide to Self-Renewal

10/12/2015

Mother Culture #3 - Grow your own soul, and the overflow will nurture those around you.
"Make yourselves nests of pleasant thoughts, bright fancies, faithful sayings; treasure-houses of precious and restful thoughts, which care cannot disturb nor poverty take away from you, houses built without hands for you souls to live in." - John Ruskin

How do you challenge your mind, nourish your emotions, and inspire your will? Answer these questions and you will have found a home where your soul can live and thrive.

Starting a series of thoughts on developing "Mother Culture" - How can a mother cultivate her soul in order to nurture the souls of her children and others in her life?
#1 Release the guilt of taking time for yourself. "To keep a lamp burning, you have to keep putting oil in it." - Mother Theresa
What does self-care look like for you? A walk outside, a good book, a hobby, an outing, a hot bath, quiet and coffee...
I challenge you to indulge in something that refreshes you over the next week. I'll do the same. And, yes, that may mean asking for help from your husband, mom, or a friend - so you can take time for yourself - guilt free.

Trying again to get this post (the personal update) right - with a pic this time!

How did I celebrate World Breastfeeding Week?

I did not make it to a Big Latch On or a hearing on breastfeeding law. No, I hardly left the house! I pondered the ongoing balance of ordinary days. Breastfeeding right now, with a 13 month old busy Everett, is our mutual solace. It's my time to slow down and enjoy just him in a house full of 6 other kiddos. We make peace about our differences - like Mommy's schedule and to-do list vs. his changing needs. I can stop to nurse and appreciate that he is still more interested in breastfeeding than any of my others at this same age, with no end in sight. Really, with his food sensitivities, Mommy's milk is a necessity more than just a happy habit.

I have always explained my work as an extension of my mothering, and that has never been more true. Yes, I am limited in supporting other moms at present, but I am learning and growing in new ways during this season of life, trusting this will make me better at what I do.

Thank you, Everett, for reminding me it's not about doing it all, but doing what matters most!

Thank you, Dads!

I wanted to post a tribute to dads today, especially for their very special role in birth and breastfeeding. But Plumtree Baby, LLC beat me to it! I love this lovely article honoring dads.

Dads, we know that week in and week out, you work hard to care for and support your family. Your involvement in your family is vital and needs to be celebrated

Thanks for this, Ann Voskamp, and also the inspiration to make June my new January and get a fresh start on life. Three goals this month - since baby boy is nearly one, gotta get back to pilates; next - read good books aloud to/with my children; purge my closet and simplify my wardrobe!

Hey Soul? Happy Monday! And fresh mercies, clean slates, new possibilities, new habits! "...take off your former way of life, your crumpled old self... to take a fresh breath & to let God renew your attitude & spirit. Then you are ready to put on your new self, modeled after the very likeness of God..."
Eph.4:22-24(Voice)... So let's to do this thing! We can do things differently, we can do hard & holy things, & we take off the old habits & literally, put on & wear new habits this week:
Change your habits -- and you can change *anything* into a possibility.

Preparing for a childbirth class, I came across this quote by one of my favorite authors, speaking for herself and a friend:
"We had seen that pregnancy did not have to be ten (lunar) months of drudgery, discomfort, and exhaustion. We were finding that pregnancy and motherhood could be highly creative times, filled with confidence, perceptiveness, awe, and appreciation for the beauty of our changing physical shape, and the the extension of this in the form of our growing children." ~ Aviva Jill Romm, The Natural Pregnancy Book

Well said - Birth should be about respecting and supporting women at such a special time!

Nearly 30 years ago I gave birth to my first baby at home, followed by three more children via three more home births in the ensuing decade. My four births were beautiful, meaningful, empowering events that supported my smooth transition into natural mothering. Admittedly, this was long before I was...
