Dive Report: 18 June 21, 0900.

Site: Lake Pend O'Reille, Trestle Creek Boat Launch area swimming south to a Railroad marker, then down to 85' along a ridge/ditch until you find the TRAIN!!!... Seriously, we found the train that left the tracks in the early 1900s. We took a bunch of photographs and data to create a 3D Model, which will be coming soon.

Depth: First Car: 85'-105', Second Car: 110'-125', Third Small
Wreckage Site: 130'-135' (We conducted this dive as a Technical Dive using a special gas blend. Do not attempt this dive without appropriate training and experience)

Time: 90 Min total immersion, with decompression.

Temp: Bottom 42F, Surface 63F. Distinct thermoclines at 30' and 80'

Vis: 10’ at surface, 15-20’ at depth.

Conditions: Sunny, mild. Steep Rock bottom and evidence of landslide boulders. Few fallen timbers. Fine silt on the surface, but not much deep mud. Light zone ended at ~70'
Flora/Fauna: Trout in the shallows, nothing observed beyond the light zone.

Got the chance to get the gills wet today and run a few drills. Thanks Michael Slavinsky for the photos and Caleb McCabe for braving the cold. Looking forward to the next year of exploring the Inland Northwest. Found the old steam boat wreck in Bayview, Lake Pond O’Reille. Pretty cool to see the old wooden stern, shaft and prop.

Idaho-Dive, Sanders Beach Right, CDA 7Nov20

Quik GoPro chop of a short trip to begin logging and exploring areas out here in the Inland Northwest. Stay tuned and let me know if you would like to come check it out Planning on marrying up a love of off-roading/overlanding with my Excursion to find some of these awesome lakes up here in the INW. #INWDivers #OverlandingDiving #Just.Go.Diving #Bringadrysuitkid

Sanders Beach is an easy spot for a check out dive or perhaps some training. Bottom comp is rock and silt; however, it's not without features. This is the first of many to come, but I'm excited that in this first trip, we found a wreck, rock structure, suprisingly high number of fish and crawfish. CDA has a lot to offer.

Coming up, look for exploration in CDA, Lake Pend Oreille (pronoued Pond-O-Ray), and tons of smaller high altitude granite lakes. The mining and gold rush history also offers some possible one of kind dives, like a train wreck near Trestle Creek... Not sure about the Locomotive, but it's possible.

INW diving is certainly a little more complex than driving to the ocean. We've only got one proper dive shop in the area, but some folks have home based fill stations. As winter approaches, we are expecting cold temps, but clearer viz. Next week, we hit a Night Dive Salmon Run off Higgins Point. Stay tuned!!!

Training you to handle Dive Emergencies!

Greetings Divers and Friends! As locations begin to loosen the reigns of social distancing, remember to rinse off your dive skills and dive planning, not just your kit... ;) Keeping yourself safe should be the top priority as we begin to reenter the water. Take a moment to analyze your surface interval, double check your gear, plan your dive, dive your plan.

What have you been up to during COVID diving restrictions?

I for one have been enjoying the flurry of webinars and virtual dives. Here are a few sources that have been interesting, intriguing, thought provoking... Enjoy.

#thehumandiver, Gareth Locke and Guy Shockey are improving divers decision making, situational awareness, and detailing how to get your team and perhaps your life toward a Just Culture. Check out the debrief! ---\/ https://www.thehumandiver.com/microclass,

#divingskillsacademy, Guy Shockey offers several online courses and challenging in-water training. Recently, he took several of us through gas planning and other topics. Highly recommend his instruction. Sample of some online content available here ----\/ https://www.divingskillsacademy.com/metric-or-imperial-choice-page

#thedivermedic, Chantelle Newman and a team of renown divers/speakers are providing daily webinars on various topics. From diving physiology, public safety diving, cave, CCR, and where recreational divers can learn from tech and public safety diving. Amazing, daily line-up... ---\/

Bag Drag before GUE Tech 1 next week. I’ll be taking my first breaths below 130 feet, on Trimix, and with decompression. For the non-diver fam and friends... its hard to explain. I get to breathe helium underwater and I don’t get to come to the surface just because I want to...For my diving family and friends...this is tough, but worth it... join me...

Board the flight tomorrow...Alaskan Airlines, please don’t lose my kit. I got a lot of bits.

Why do Technical Dive Training in Alaska, instead of some tropical resort...? Because it’s hard. Nobody gets better by staying in their comfort zone. Though, the only way to increase the degree of difficulty, IMO, would be to get pepper sprayed just before descent.

Many thanks to my family for tolerating me and my pursuit. Countless hours of discussing decompression theory and hearing my random remarks as I read through Navy Studies and original works of Haldane, Workman, Hills, et.al. Nancie Chenoweth Slater is so kind in her acceptance of me.

Many thanks for my boss and work compadres for permitting the time off to chase this crazy goal. I know it’s a hectic time period and I’m truly grateful.

Thanks Ron Fancher, Dive Alaska and Guy Shockey for opening up the opportunity. Been prepping for a while so I hope not to disappoint. Fingers crossed I stay alive/warm enough to finish training.

I’ll definitely take pics along the journey and video some topside and bottom time for as long as I can feel my hands. Wish me luck.

Sea Tiger Night Dive Teaser - June 2019

Night Dive on the Sea Tiger Wreck off of Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii. Only had a couple shots come out, so I made a short teaser clip of some cool white tips that were cruising about the deck and swimming through so of my favorite swim throughs... made things interesting peeking around the corners. Sharks are awesome and should be respected for the amazing creatures they are... not feared or hunted.

So... went diving last Sunday and ran into someone familiar.... the Orlando Bloom!!!

Promised him I wouldn’t post until after he left island. Dat Paperrazzi. Needless to say, I was star struck and only slightly a dork.

What are the chances? Me, Will Turner, his companion, and our guide. Shared almost 2 hours underwater with my kids childhood hero. Thanks to Living Ocean Scuba for letting me sneak on board that morning.

Daughter was supposed to shore dive with me that morning, but she wasn’t feeling it... so I snuck out on the morning boat. She was a little salty when I told her what she missed.

Decent Diver and pretty easy going too... Dove the YO and San Pedro wrecks for the first dive and Horse Shoe Reef for the second. Tons of Honus, sea turtles, couple Leaf Frog Fish, and plenty of invertebrates.

YO 257 and Lindsey's Reef - Jan2019

Amazing Saturday morning dive with #DiveOahu #DiveOahuDiveClub. Talk about one on one service, turned out that there wasn't anyone else to sign up for the dive, but they ended up taking my son and I out anyway. Luckily they had some staff training and decided to go ahead and take us out, but we had the whole boat to ourselves and two amazing guides, Lindsey and Lindsay ;). Jason the captain was great, as usual, and he took us to the YO-257, where the current was non-existent and vis was 10o foot plus. Nice Slack tide through the morning, so super calm conditions. As soon as we ducked our head under you could see the YO and the San Pedro side by side. Got two wrecks for one dive. Gotta go back. 2nd Dive was a Turtle Cleaning station just off of the Hilton Hawaiian beach front, which did not disappoint. Easily 20 individual turtles. 8 turtles at one station, 6 at another, 4-5 on reef patrol chilling together, several sleeping under rocks... wow. 2nd dive also have several eels, tiniest nudi we ever saw, several other nudibranchs, lots of schooling snappers, butterflyfish, spadefish, and several healthy coral growths. Coolest shot I got was of a turtle cruising right over me and into a sunball. Thanks Dive Oahu for a great morning with my son visiting from the mainland.

Bat Ray 22 July 2018 Catalina Islands

Took a short side trip to the Channel Islands and Catalina Islands on my way to the new home. Got to dive with my parents and best friend, where we were rewarded with pretty cool encounters with some caverns, sea lions, and an up close interview with a bat ray. Anacapa (2/2)- Wizard's Hat & Wreck of the Winfield Scott (01 July 2018)

Epic Dive with a great group of divers from the LA GUE scene. This site has at least three main attractions. Depths range from 10' to 35', Temp was 61F, and super calm seas. Wizard's Hat is a pinnacle that rises out of the water with a cavernous swim through in about 15-20' of water. Next, the Wreck of the Winfield Scott is an old Paddleboat Ferry from the Gold Rush era (late 1850s) that sunk near Wizard's Hat and the adjacent wash rocks. Structure is mostly gone, but several artifacts can be found strewn about the wreck site, such as the hub of the Paddle Wheel and several pipes, planks, and huge brass nails. Last, the White Cliffs (bird poo) has a nice long wall to dive. We hit the first two and then meandered our way back to the wall before thumbing the dive. In addition to the sites, we had massive sea bass and a harbor seal on patrol. Very healthy kelp and plenty of rock fish and other wildlife. Epic dive.

Congrats to CA's newest Open Water Divers. Excellent job by Leann, Steven, Connor, and Naz. They finished open water training in mix of conditions. Dives 1 & 2 had great vis 30' plus, with cold temps, 52-54 deg. Very next weekend... Dives 3 & 4 had 5-10' vis, slight surge and surf, and 56 deg water.. oh and we woke to 37 degrees. Divers trained in CA's Central Coast can take their training anywhere. Next, Mexico or Channel Islands! Who's in?
