Today is Juneteenth, a holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States. To celebrate this anniversary, we wanted to share this stunning work by artist Kadir Nelson titled “Black Gothic.”
.
This piece is just one of a multitude of artworks that have utilized “American Gothic” as a template, in order to communicate a message about what it means to be American, from “American Gothic, Washington, D.C.” (1942), by Gordon Parks (which is also considered to be the first notable parody of “American Gothic”), to “American Indian Gothic” (1983) by David P. Bradley.

Join Goldie and explore the state together through new online activities to bring history alive from the comfort of your own home! Each week of summer will focus on a state historic site, an Iowa history topic or a local museum. This week's summer experience takes us to the American Gothic House in Eldon, Iowa - famous as the backdrop of Grant Wood’s 1930 painting.

Grant Wood’s love for art developed early, as did his artistic ability. The Iowa native drew everything he saw in nature around him, such as animals, houses, trees and chickens, his favorite. Center Closure and COVID-19 (Press Release) - UPDATED 3/26/20 — American Gothic House & Center

An update on our visitor center closure:

Due to public health concerns over COVID-19, our center will now be temporarily closed until further notice. Details and the most up-to-date information can be found at our website. We hope to open again as soon as possible, but we cannot say when this will be, given the current crisis.

Thank you for understanding, and please stay safe and healthy!

Few can disagree, these are very strange times. But we strongly urge everyone in our community and around the globe to stay calm, and know that we are all in this together, and we will all get through this together. (Even if we're not physically together.)

If you’re looking for information related to the human resources many of us are trying to ensure we have (from food to child care), we strongly encourage you to check out the hotline 2-1-1, which you can either call directly, or access at their website: 211iowa.org (Nationwide website: 211.org) Also, please know that there is a wealth of resources and information out there, and whatever you are going through, you are not alone.

We’ll be maintaining a list of resources on our website, americangothichouse.org, both directly related to COVID-19, as well as indirectly (including educational/entertainment resources for anyone caring for young kids). Feel free to check it out, as we hope to continue to add to it in the coming days.

Lastly, we've all heard it before, but again, please remember to wash your hands as often as you can, practice social distancing to the best of your ability (including leaving at least 6 feet between you and anyone around you, especially all the folks still at work who are doing their best to keep basic services going), and stay at home if you feel sick. And above all, please practice compassion and patience. We’re in this together, and we will get through this together!

As of right now, our center plans to remain open, but please check back for updates before traveling to visit us. Thank you for understanding!

The Iowa Caucuses are upon us once again! As always, the caucuses have brought a media blitz upon our Midwestern state, which often results in political cartoon parodies featuring another Iowa icon: American Gothic! Here are just a few examples from over the years. Have you seen any political cartoons featuring American Gothic lately? Let us know about it! 👨‍🌾🎨🗳📰

Donna Jeffrey is on mission to energize Eldon, town made famous by 'American Gothic' home

We are pleased to see that The Des Moines Register has honored Donna Jeffrey (an active member of the Eldon community in many ways, including serving on our American Gothic House Center Board), as one of their "15 People to Watch in 2020."

Congratulations, Donna! Thank you for all the hard work you do for Eldon!

With a $150,000 state grant, Eldon opened an educational center near the famous home. Donna Jeffrey estimates it draws about 15,000 visitors a year.

Please note that the American Gothic House itself is usually closed most of the year, as it is only open on the second Saturday of the month from April to October, from 10am to 4pm. Despite popular misconceptions, it has always been largely closed off to the public, as the last resident of the house only moved out in 2014, which is when it became possible for our center to offer occasional public tours. For more information on public tours, or other events when the House itself might be open, please see our website.

A little goldfinch, hard at work in our gardens! 🌱🌼

Did you know that the eastern goldfinch (a.k.a. the American goldfinch) is the official state bird of Iowa? It was designated as such in 1933 (3 years after Grant Wood painted American Gothic).

It was also adopted as the state bird of New Jersey in 1935, and the state bird of Washington State in 1951 (as the “willow goldfinch”).

Do you know any other facts about the eastern goldfinch? Share them here!

For those who'd like an inside look at the house, our open day for July is this Saturday from 10 to 4! Stop on by to step inside this historic house. Touring the house is free, and no tickets or reservations are required. 🏠📷

This Saturday is a special day in Eldon, as the American Gothic House will be open for tours! Get a rare look inside the house that started it all from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The American Gothic House Center will also be open, so you’ll be able to tour the museum, buy souvenirs in the gift shop and have your picture taken dressed as that famous couple in Grant Wood’s painting.

And here’s an added bonus – the American Gothic House now has a selfie station! Thanks to the staff of Wapello County Conservation, the amazing station features the house’s window and makes it easier than ever to have your picture taken in front of the iconic house! Add it to your must-do list this weekend.

Ready for a trip to the American Gothic House? Like this post and tag the friends and family who need to join you!

The inspiration for American Gothic

Strike your own pose in front of the real house that, in 1930, inspired Iowa artist Grant Wood to paint his most famous painting, American Gothic, depicting a stern pair of people, one holding a “pitchfork”, in front of an unusual farmhouse with a large gothic window. Enjoy educational exhibits and videos on Grant Wood, view a fascinating collection of American Gothic parodies, and pin your town on our map. Find prints, postcards, books, clothing and other souvenirs in our gift shop. We also provide costumes and pitchforks during our center’s open hours, so you can capture your own American Gothic parody. Admission to the American Gothic House Center is free! Tours of the house itself happen on the second Saturday of the month, April to October, from 10am-4pm.
