Obituary for Alfred Anthony Bove, M.D., Ph.D. at McConaghy Funeral Home, Ltd.

This week we laid to rest an extraordinary person and a fantastic professional, Dr. Alfred ((Fred) Bove. You can't be in the diving business and not know Dr. Bove. Not only one of the best Cardiologists in the world but a fantastic explorer into Diving and Hyperbaric medicine.

After taking a big CNS hit of decompression sickness in 1975, I was happy to be a test subject for Fred in his research for Atrial Septal Defects and Patent Foramen Ovale as they relate to the likely hood of the bends. I can't say that it was incredibly pleasant to be a guinea pig but we had a very interesting time and even though Dr. Bove was very intense in his study, we laughed and learned a lot. I haven't seen him in many years but he is a legend in my mind who will live on in the World of Underwater Science forever. RIP. Doc!

Alfred Anthony Fred Bove, MD, PhD, of Wynnewood, PA, died at the age of 81 from complications of glioblastoma. Dr. Bove was born in South Philadelphia to Alfred Anthony Bove, Sr. and Adeline DeRose Bove. He was the beloved husband of Sandra Ann Seltzer Bove and father of Jacqueline Marie

Sad new today from one our Friends at Atlantic Beach Fire Dept. Sending Prayers and thoughts to Chief Snyder and his family in this time of need.
https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10156234089557794&id=335837552793

The Town of Atlantic Beach sadly acknowledges that on Saturday March 9th Fire/EMS chief Adam Snyder was critically injured in a snow skiing accident while on a weekend trip with family members at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia. He was immediately transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA where he remains in critical condition. Family members along with members of the Atlantic Beach Fire Department are now by his side.

Snyder, 46, is a twenty year member of the Atlantic Beach Fire Department and has served the past fifteen years serving Chief. He is a United States Marine Corps veteran where he served as a Rescue Swimmer. During his fire-fighting career he has become renowned in Eastern North Carolina by his numerous personal first responder involvements and lifesaving actions.

The Town of Atlantic Beach desires to thank the members of the Charlottesville Fire Department for their kindness shown in reaching out to the Snyder family. We would also like to extend thanks to Chief Jamie Fulk and the Morehead City Fire Dept., the Carteret County Fire Marshalls Office and all surrounding county Fire Fighting/EMS agencies for their continued support to the ABFD.

Mayor Trace Cooper, the Town Council and the ABFD members request you hold our Chief and the Snyder family in your prayers.

Happy Women's History Month! We'll be honoring the contributions of female #NavyDivers and #NavyEOD throughout March. Our first feature is Rear Admiral Babette "Bette" Bolivar. She most recently served as Commander, Navy Region Southeast.

She earned her initial diving qualification in 1989. From 1998-2000, she was the Commanding Officer of USS Salvor (ARS-52) and served as the director of ammunition offload from @USS Cole (DDG-67) after the 2000 terrorist attack in Yemen. She served as the first female Commanding Officer of Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit One from 2003-2005. In 2006, she deployed to Afghanistan for 12 months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. She was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame in 2005.

She said, "When I was 8 years old, I was a near-drowning victim and had to be resuscitated. From then on, I told myself I would conquer both the seas and my fear of the seas by learning more and becoming part of the underwater environment. I took swimming lessons and gradually eased my way back into the water...and eventually earned a degree in oceonography."

*Diving drysuits
Because of heavier materials and robust seams, a properly maintained PS drysuit can last up to 10 years plus.

*Breathable Surface Rescue Drysuits
The average life cycle of these suits is about 5 years. Thinner materials and usage in rough environments, along with these drysuits typically being worn on longer missions, lend to them wearing out quicker.

Consider these factors when determining replacement:

•Usage (monthly training and 20-25 annual calls vs. quarterly training and 2-3 annual calls)
•Environment (arid or frigid climate vs. mild climate states)
•Storage (hot trailer or car trunk vs. temperature controlled dive locker)
•Other contributing factors (chemical exposure either from the water or from cleaning contaminates off a drysuit)

The above life cycles are averages. The best determinant of when to replace a drysuit is individual inspection for wear and tear. Annually, at minimum, you should:

•Inspect seams
•Inspect seals
•Inspect zippers
•Inspect socks/boots
•Inspect material in wear areas
•Run a pressure test

You can patch drysuits, replace seals and boots/socks, and repair seams. However, if the zipper is leaking, especially on an older suit, it’s probably best to replace the suit.

Like everything in life, care and maintenance goes a long way.
