Four students were shot and killed by the National Guard at Kent State University in Ohio during an anti-war demonstration. Neil Young reacted to the senseless slayings by writing and recording the song, "Ohio", with Crosby, Stills & Nash, the very next day.

A Pennsylvania based group called The Buoys saw their biggest hit record, "Timothy", peak at #17 on the Hot 100. The Rupert Holmes written tune stayed in the Top 40 for eight weeks, and may very well be the only hit song ever written about cannibalism.

Rock and Roll pioneer Eddie Cochran was just 21 years old when he was killed after the taxi in which he was riding blew a tire, then hit a lamp post. Cochran enjoyed hits with"Sittin' in the Balcony" ( #18 in 1957), "Summertime Blues" ( #8 in 1958) and "C'mon Everybody" ( #35 in 1959). Gene Vincent, who recorded "Be Bop A Lula" in 1956, and Cochran's fiancee, Sharon Sheeley, survived the crash. Their touring mate, Freddy Cannon, was supposed to be with them, but was running late and took another cab.

The Beatles' original bass player, 22 year old Stuart Sutcliffe, died of a brain hemorrhage. Sutcliffe was included in the band because he had the equipment and place to rehearse, although he couldn't play very well. His girlfriend, Astrid Kirchherr, created The Beatle haircut for Stu, and John and Paul followed soon after. Sutcliffe can be heard on very early Beatle tracks included on "Anthology 1". He left the band in 1961 to resume painting because his headaches were getting too severe to play.

The Beatles set a recording industry record that may never be equaled. They held the top 5 positions on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Can't Buy Me Love" at number 1, "Twist and Shout" at number 2, "She Loves You" at number 3, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" at number 4 and "Please Please Me" at number 5. In Canada, they had nine of the Top 10 singles, while the Australian charts saw them occupying the first six places.

44 year old Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his father after a heated family argument. Gaye had just received a Grammy for his hit, "Sexual Healing", his first Top 40 single in 5 1/2 years. Remarkably, Gaye's father received only a six-year suspended sentence and five years probation after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Charges of first-degree murder were dropped after doctors discovered Marvin Sr. had a brain tumor which would kill him in October, 1998.
