Happy Friday! We’re ending the week with our instrument spotlight on this charming Klotz family cello ca. 1780 which, of course, is available in our Chicago showroom. Slightly petite, this cello is typical of the Mittenwald school of the time and features a rich golden brown varnish and an attractive quarter cut spread with continuous flaming across the back.

We’re live at The Midwest Clinic! A favorite event of ours, we often lend instruments to the middle school and high school orchestra programs coming to Chicago from many places across the country. We’re so happy this could happen this year, thanks to the city of Chicago and the many teams working to insure a safe and healthy convention.

They formed a style between the 2nd and 3rd generation of makers in our workshop. Indeed, the instruments from this time period reflect the passing of knowledge from makers already established in our shop to the new generation, such is the way of things even today.

Gary Garavaglia, one of the original luthiers of the William Harris Lee & Co. workshop, is finishing a cello based on Janos Starker’s 1705 Goffriller which he had the pleasure of working on years ago. His output is often surpassed by the demand for his instruments, which are are played in top music schools and in professional ensembles around the world. Fortunately, William Harris Lee & Co. has a few instruments left in stock and is expecting more like this cello very soon.

Instrument spotlight: A fine violin by Nicolas Lupot (1758 – 1824)

Originally from Orléans, Nicolas Lupot moved to Paris around 1796 after years of regular subcontracting for François Pique. This violin is a fine example of his early Parisian works around the same time period (ca. Mid-1790s) and is modeled after Antonio Stradivari. In fact, Lupot is recognized as one of the greatest French violin makers, along with J.B. Vuillaume, and is known as the French Stradivari. Vuillaume was heavily influenced by Lupot’s approach which partly inspired his work to replicate Italian masters.

This violin reflects Lupot’s inspiration of the Cremonese instruments which undoubtedly passed through his bench to be repaired and evaluated. In 1813, he was chosen as violin maker to the Chapelle Royale under the reign of Napoleon and later under the reinstated French monarchy. Elegant in craftsmanship as well as in sound, this fine violin is available to audition for its next owner. Book your appointment to try it! Go to Whlee.com or call 312-786-0459.

Our line of C. Jean Pique violins, violas, & cellos are essential instruments for advanced high school students. The Pique features an array of outstanding tonal characteristics including a bright tone with fullness and projection. Luthiers in our workshop expertly perform graduations and varnish each Pique a rich red color with light antiquing that highlights beautiful wood, giving timeless quality to the finish. Many students have won positions in all-district to all-state programs as well as in national youth symphonies playing on our Piques. That’s Pique performance!
