Commemorating Juneteenth involves families assembling to celebrate liberation together. It is a reminder that among the foulest crimes of the slave system was denying the right of the enslaved to create a family, and to have that family circle protected by law. With I Can't Wait to Call You my Wife Rita Roberts documented how freed people helped to overthrow the slave power by assembling and solemnizing their families however they could, both before and after emancipation. Yesterday marked the anniversary of the death of Senator Stephen A. Douglas in 1861. His death, along with Fort Sumter and the death of Elmer Ellsworth, were among the first tragedies to bring home the trauma of the new Civil War. Before the end of the summer Americans would experience grief on a totally unanticipated level. These eulogies from his Congressional friends and rivals seem almost naive when we think about what was coming. May 31, 1862 and the Battle of Seven Pines was not a great day for Confederate General Gustavus Smith, and he wrote a couple of books trying to explain away his blunders. It was also a bad day for James Longstreet, as explained by Elizabeth Varon. It was more than pretty bad for Joe Johnston and Jeff Davis. Lee was still standing as Allen Guelzo explains, but still not great. Basically, every Johnny general that punched the clock that day could not wait for the workday to be over. On May 28, 1864 General Sherman's army faced General Joseph Johnston's Confederates along Pumpkinvine Creek in northwest Georgia. The soldiers called it The Hell Hole. Among those troops were the Army of the Cumberland and the XIV Corps. This beautiful acorn logo of the XIV Corps is embossed on the cover of Thomas Van Horne's History of the Army of the Cumberland. Check out our 1st edition with scarce Atlas at the link. https://alincolnbookshop.com/product/thomas-b-van-horne-history-of-the-army-of-the-cumberland-1st-ed/
