C'ville Arts welcomes new member, Laura Vik.

"I began working with clay back in 2006 and immediately felt as if I found my home. Part of my enjoyment comes from the tactile experience of working with clay. I want to create pieces that will connect with people, pull them in; whether it is though the feel of how a mug fits in your hand or through some visual aspect of the pottery. Lately I have begun creating pottery that appears worn, well loved. What made someone decide repair the piece? What is its history? These are questions I hope people will ask."

Ways to show your support for local artists and artisans

Shop, donate and show-up for Charlottesville’s arts community

C’ville Arts Cooperative located on the Downtown Mall is a space that features handmade works by around 50 to 60 Virginia artists each year — a group that is “proud to be a thriving local cooperative business in Charlottesville,” according to artist Flame Bilyue. The work available for purchases includes but is not limited to beaded jewelry, prints, greeting card sets and even notebooks. As a cooperative, the artists work together to operate the store so you will be able to meet and engage with the artists on duty throughout the day.

And so much more...

"If I had to reduce my work and motivation down to one statement it would be that I have always felt compelled to make things. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to understand the way things work and how they go together. I still feel that way now.

When creating, I don’t worry about whether or my work is in good taste or bad, I simply follow my curiosity wherever it takes me and try to make useful things that bring me joy. This often means being inspired by pop culture, which can be tacky, dated, absurd, and in poor taste. At other times, I’m obsessed with timelessness, the modern artists and designers who lead the art world, and the centuries of craftsmen and women who came before me. I do my best to honor their legacy while embracing my own creative vision."

Today is my 15 Year Anniversary of being a member of C'ville Arts:! Formerly known as Transient Crafters, it was one of my personal favorite local shop for finding amazing gifts for friends and family and well, me😊 15 years ago the cooperative accepted me as a new member and I have felt abundantly honored and grateful ever since. ❤🔥
As I celebrate 15 years of my C'ville Arts membership, I also reflect on the evolution of my art and career as an artist. 2001 my mother passed away and left me at a crossroads. Watching her life of struggle and lots of regret, I decided that I would not squander how ever many breathes I had left in this life time. I would do what excited me most and what frightened me most. I simply declared one day I was a professional artist. Having creating art of all sorts my entire life, I had confidence in my skill but nothing else about art and the business of art. Little did I know I had been honing those skill while selling our community's crafts art art festivals and fairs. So, I said to myself and my local small town printer, "I am a professional and freelance artist and available for and art or graphic drawing that his customers needed. Bam! In just a few days, a classic car club hired me to design their tshirts and posters for that year's gathering. The owner of the Thomas Kinkaid Charlottesville Gallery invited me to show my art in his Local Artists Gallery. That Holiday shopping season I set up a small average sized card table along the Pedestrian Mall and sold individually wrapped large Notecards of 5 or 6 of my paintings. The image quality was not that good but people bought them anyway. Early and later versions are included below. Plus, I had fortunately, set up next to Leslie Allyn, who would become a friend and role model. Within a few years I joined her and 50+ others at Transient Crafters now known as C'ville Arts: A Cooperative Gallery! Please enjoy our 15% off everything I have listed online. Use the coupon code FLAME15 and join our email list as well. ❤ https://arttransformslife.com #anniversary
