Beverly Y. Smith works from her most recent series:
Last Seen Wearing
After the Civil War, many freed people used newspaper advertisements to try to contact their family members separated by war, slavery, and emancipation.
These ads documented how extensive the separation of Black families was through the domestic slave trade. The ads also verify the persistent efforts people made to reunite with their loved ones.
Through my quilts, my ancestors beckon me to find family members separated as early as the 1700s
My attempt through a series of quilts “Last Seen Wearing” calls out their names.

Join us in celebration of Immigrant Heritage Month, this Saturday, June 18th at 6pm, with the opening of our newest exhibition ‘re·sil·ience,’ brought to you by the Brooklyn Collective and co-curated by SOZO Gallery.
Resilience is one of the most powerful forces of human nature. This exhibition presents the works of seven artists cataloguing their distinctive journeys of immigration. The Brooklyn Collective celebrates the common ground and determination of these artists, the grit and resilience of their families, and the immigrant’s positive influence on our American spirit.

Deb Koo's charming still life paintings frequently feature recognizable subject matter: table settings, food, florals, furniture, and figures. Capturing seemingly common moments through the lens of soft, colorful realism, Koo creates a world in which we are immersed in the sweetness of human connection, long summer days, shared meals, tasty treats, and togetherness.
Art-centric design takes the cake (and the pizza too)! 🍰🍕
Something beautiful happens when art is the heart of a space. Deb Koo's charming tablescape paintings add so much character to this client/designer's home.
We love collaborating with interior designers to help build the perfect commercial and residential spaces.

's charming still life paintings frequently feature recognizable subject matter: table settings, food, florals, furniture, and figures. Capturing seemingly common moments through the lens of soft, colorful realism, Koo creates a world in which we are immersed in the sweetness of human connection, long summer days, shared meals, tasty treats, and togetherness. Though Deb’s paintings are nearly always based on her personal experiences and memories, each image invites us into an intimate history that could very well be our own — moments of nostalgia captured in time and space.
Scenes from everyday life, Koo’s paintings take seemingly ordinary and mundane moments and reveal their true essence of concentrated warmth and joy.
(New York, New York) is an interdisciplinary artist whose works are marked by an abundant use of symbology, with nods to intimacy, feminine subject matter, and cross-cultural dialogue.

“ A quadriptych I created in early 2021, after a year of limited interaction with family and friends, other artists and collectors. Each painting functions as its own distinct entity — secure and complete within its own canvas. Yet, bring them together, and the energy shifts, something new takes shape and you begin to wonder how the pieces could have ever been apart.”
