The piano pictured is a first of firsts! It was built by Heinrich Engelhard Steinway in 1936. It was his first piano, and interestingly, he built it in the kitchen of his home in Seesen, Germany. The Kitchen piano is currently on display in the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Next time you are out that way, be sure to visit! https://mim.org/

Rachmaninoff had very large hands which explains why some of his pieces are rather difficult for many performers. From the tip of his little finger to the tip of his thumb, he was able to span 12 notes. I have a 10 key span- what is yours?🎹

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was born in April just a mere 20 years after Steinway & Sons was founded in Manhattan in a rented loft on Varick Street. Rachmaninoff received many offers from piano manufacturers to tour with their instruments, but he chose Steinway.

“Dear Mr. Steinway, I am very happy to have the opportunity of using your pianos for my concerts because I consider them to be perfect in every way. Faithfully yours, Sergei Rachmaninoff”

This past Sunday, our Greenville gallery had the good fortune to present a fantastic program featuring duets (one piano and four hands). The pianists-- Dr. Howard Kim of Anderson University and Dr. Eunjung Choi of Claflin University-- performed works by French composers (Debussy, Fauré, Satie, and Poulenc) as well as a traditional Korean
folk tune which was arranged by Dr. Howard Kim.

Steinway Artist Lang Lang performed to a full house at UNCG this past Saturday. His program was a wonderful mix of Chopin Mazurkas, Schumann's Kreisleriana Op 16, and Fauré's Pavane in F sharp minor. He ended the program with Chopin's tragic Polonaise (Op. 44 in F sharp minor). We had the wonderful fortune to visit him back stage.
