another fun day at the garden..but no pictures. we were that busy!
we pruned the apple tree away from the muscadines, and shifted some materials around doing inventory.
if the weather holds clear next week, we'll resume cleaning the plots (too muddy yesterday) and hopefully get some root seeds down.
If you have tree pruning skills and tools, please let us know. We have some fruit trees that need major help!

We have figured out the "social distancing" in-person gardening classes. We used to like to have our classes at both the farm and the hardware store, splitting time between both places. But for this season we are adjusting and staying at the farm for our 2-hr sessions.⠀
We have 3 classes coming up this month! ⠀
August 10th, 6:30-8:30pm : Fall Gardening Basics⠀
August 18th, 6:30-8:30pm : Flower Arranging⠀
August 24th, 8:30-10:30am : Fall Gardening Basics⠀
⠀
Details and registration here - https://www.renfrowhardware.com/classes
⠀
We hope that you will join us! Several of our attendees in our two July sessions said that this was one of their first times out of the house and folks were enthusiastic and excited to experience a bit of "normalcy". It also was great to have the 2020 craziness conversations confined to the non-controversial realm of garden pests and the weather. πŸ˜‰

Growing Gourds Part 4 of 5 - Bottle Gourds (Long Melon or Opo squash)

A colleague was telling me about bottle gourds. Very nutritious, and neutral flavored so it takes on the taste of whatever flavors you add to it. I have never had them, but he says the are popular in curries and other spicy dishes.

No complaints about pests. Apparently, they don't get many pests, so it might be an alternative to traditional summer squashes.

We show you how easily you can grow bottle gourds in your garden. Bottle gourd is an edible gourd which can be used to make both entrees and desserts. Its a ...

We sowed cucumber seeds.
We harvested, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, okra, lemon mint, carrots, beans, eggplants, peppers.
We did an OOOPPSSIE and pulled up the sorghums, (they were suppose to be ready in the Fall)🀦 ..Thought they were corns gone bad.🀷🀷.But we gonna make them useful and do some floral arrangements ..Sooo their living so far will not be in vein.πŸ˜‰
Mr Horsie came by to be petted, and Selma decided to go for a ride..
Awesome Sauce!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend Gardeners πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

I picked these apples green before the worms, bugs and critters got to them, cut them up, dried them in a dehydrator, put them in the freezer overnight, and ground them into semi-powder in a blender. Once they got to that point, they came close to the consistency and flavor of those pricey freeze dried apples they sell in the little bags.

I use them in smoothies, but I figure you could put them on your cereal, ice cream, in your banana/squash breads, etc.... So if you have one of those back-yard apple trees and don't know what to do with the apples, you could preserve them this way instead of them going to waste.

After centuries of crossing by mule and riverboat, the mighty Okra River had finally been bridged. No longer would there be the danger of tripping as you jumped across--or worse, landing on the bed itself, threatening the lives of young okra plants.

The 2020s were difficult times, yet in the midst of them, ingenuity and willpower had triumphed over adversity.
