Super excited to find this baby last night. I got a group of 5 adults 6 years ago and had good success with breeding, one of the original males died so I paired up one of the original huge females with a F1 unrelated baby. After almost 2 years together with no babies I had kind of written her off as too old…but found this baby cruising their tank last night.

The colors on the babies is crazy gorgeous. There aren’t many that I know of in the US at this point. They are found in Northeast Madagascar on the coast surrounding Antongil Bay.

Antongil velvet gecko or Blaesodactylus antongilensis.

First time for me hatching this species, Ailuronyx seychellensis or Seychelles bronze gecko. They have the largest “glued” eggs I’ve seen on glass. (Glued meaning they lay their eggs on trees, etc and as the egg dries it adheres to the surface until hatching.). These eggs are hatching in-situ in the cage, luckily this baby was safe and sound, and apparently ignored by the parents.

What beast of an animal slashed me like a razor? What monster did this?

Just a tiny little Borneo earless monitor or Lanthanotus borneensis. 🤣🤣. I’ve been raising up a pair for about 4 months now I’ve been bitten twice…both times pre-shed….their skin is extra sensitive during that time. Google “borneo earless jessie maisano” for cat scan images of their skull and teeth.

Very reclusive, almost fully aquatic, they hide 99% of the time but are ferocious eating.

Warning: feeding videos of dead mice

While the young Crocodilurus primary eat various insects, I offer chopped pinkies once or twice a week as well. This video is one of the eight 2 month olds enjoying some pinky pieces.

The 2nd video is a 7 month old male baby eating a whole small pinky. Look at his pupils dilate and constrict as he’s eating it…

The older animals and adults will eat large pinkies or really small fuzzies too but I still vary their diet with super worms, Dubia, large crickets, worms, fish, etc.

(2nd video is in the comments because I can’t figure out how to get more than one video to attach🤣🤣)

Looks like one of my oldest female babies is going through her first ovulation. Picture of her and one of the same age male clutchmates.

She’s easily double his girth at this point. They are almost exactly 18 months old now and about the same size as my adults were when I got them.

The past 3 years have been such a wild ride with these rare and amazing animals. 6 clutches, over 25 babies hatched with 21 thriving babies.

I have a few extra males that are about a year old for 🛩

CBB crocodile tegus or Crocodilurus amazonicus.

Another new baby today, Halmahera geckos are one of the most underrated geckos out there. Often seen as cheap and sickly imports, captive animals are easy to keep, thrive, breed easily, and are long lived.
I’ve been working with them for over 15 years and a chunky new baby hatching is always amazing.

When I saw how much red the parents had, I picked up a pair of babies about 6 months ago.
No filter, just a flash picture.

I also have a pair of normal colored adults…IMO the most amazing looking non-venomous snake out there.

Thank you for an amazing pair of animals!

Crocodile tegu clutch #4 is hatching! You can see on the Tupperware the lay date of August 21st 2022 and my estimated hatch date of 1/18/2023, 150 days later. The first baby hatched yesterday….off by one day 🙂

There are 9 eggs in this clutch, 2 babies are currently out. If all the eggs hatch and survive, that will put me at 23 babies total. Probably time to ✈️ a few of them!

Crocodilurus amazonicus or crocodile tegu

After finding a pair of eggs a week ago, I went digging and found another pair of much larger eggs buried under some cork bark. I set them up in the incubator and late last night I saw a baby looking back at me…90% of the incubation was in-situ. Excitement is a mild term for my elation at seeing this baby!!

Neusticurus bicarinatus or the “two-faced” Neusticurus.

I believe this to be one of the only times they have been bred in captivity, but I would love to hear from everyone if there are others out there!

When I post pictures of the babies, I’m often asked how big crocodile tegus get. This picture is of my adult male who has fathered all of my babies. As you can see they have a relatively small body size and very small head. The adult female is maybe an inch longer and a bit thicker but relatively the same size (she’s a bit of a spaz so no nice pics posing like he does)

Found these beauties in the incubator yesterday. One of the first geckos I ever bred in the early 2000s from some adults I got from . These particular babies are from a group of adults that I imported from Europe. Bulky big headed ground geckos with an “eat everything that moves” attitude.

Namib Giant Ground Gecko or Chondrodactylus angulifer.

After her last clutch exactly 3 months ago to the day….I never reintroduced the male as I wanted to give her some time to bulk up and ensure she had enough calcium, etc.
Yesterday I noticed her clawing around and I could again see the huge lumps in her side so I put her into a tank with just soil hoping she’d dig a next. No luck with the nest but 10 eggs strewn about this morning. (All 3 of her previous clutches were 8)

A few of the eggs look collapsed but most are looking perfect so into the incubator they all went. I’ll candle them in a week or so to see how they are looking.
If any eggs are fertile this would be proof in this species of s***m retention.

Babies out basking and exploring. They’re complete freak shows when they’re little, just a wee bit flighty. 😬

5 of the babies look good. 2 unfortunately died right after hatching. Such a bummer after months and months to have an animal hatch and then die. They appeared very weak right from the start vs the usual energy.

4 eggs still incubating from a surprise February clutch.

I’ve had these almost 3 months now and they are doing great. I love how their tails look just like a crocodilian. Even though they are very reclusive and flighty, they never try to bite when I pick them up.

Adult male is pictured, I have 5 total so be fingers crossed that I can captive breed them in the next year or two.

I’ve been asked what candling an egg looks like to check if they’re fertile. You can see my “candle” is a flashlight that I attached a cone of black construction paper to.

With the lights off, when the cone is held against or near an egg, it may look red or you can see veins in some species.

However, I never throw an egg away unless it’s starting to rot or grow mold…even if it candles solid white…just in case.

The eggs in these pictures belong to a crocodile tegu, Crocodilurus amazonicus, and were laid on October 14th, 2021.

I don’t do a lot of work with spiders but I have a few species of Poecilotheria and 1.2 of these beauties, commonly known as Purple bloom.

Large terrestrial spiders that make impressive underground homes. The females are large bodied and mainly brown but males are a brilliant purple after their final adult molts.
