Delivery Optimization

Delivery Optimization

Normally we do not send emails out so quickly after each other. However, it has come to our attention that the newest release of Windows 10 has Delivery Optimization turned on by default.
We want to take a minute to explain what this means to you and your computer. With the default settings shown below, your computer will be used to download, cache, and send updates to other computers on the internet. While this may not be a major security concern it will create "extra work" for your computer that is out of your control.

At TechMedX we have turned this option off for all of our computers and choose to get updates directly from Microsoft, and not give out any updates. We recommend that you take a look at the link provided below. It explains the process in more detail and gives direction on how to make any changes that you would like to.

As always if you have any questions or if would like assistance with this change, please let us know. Give us a call at 703-250-0382 or send an email to [email protected]. Where here to help!

The Free Windows 10 upgrade deadline is approaching.

The Free Windows 10 upgrade deadline is approaching.

The Free Windows 10 upgrade deadline is approaching.

Microsoft is offering the upgrade to Windows 10 for FREE, but only until July 29th 2016. If your computer is less than two years old, and running Windows 8 or 8.1, TechMedX highly recommends upgrading to the new Windows 10 operating system. If your computer is more than 2 years old, and running Windows 7 we do NOT recommend upgrading.

The upgrade process usually completes successfully. However, we have seen a small percentage of upgrades fail. The failure ranges from a minor inconvenience to the system being rendered inoperable. The time that it takes to perform the upgrade depends on the individual computer, but the average Windows 10 upgrade time takes approximately 2 hours to complete, from start to finish.

For only $85.00* TechMedX is offering a special deal on Windows 10 upgrade services to help assist our clients. This includes preforming a complete system backup/image of your computer before the installation of Windows 10. This protects your personal information (documents, photos, music) as well as creating an image of the operating system with your current applications. We do this because if there are any complications during or after the upgrade than we can restore the computer back to its originating state using the image that we created before the upgrade. When the upgrade is finished we test the machine to make sure everything is functioning properly.

If you prefer not to unplug the cables and cords from your machine (or put them back when your machine is ready) we are available to pick up your device for an additional charge of $67.50 ($42.50 for Managed Services clients). This includes bringing the machine back to you and plugging everything back in when it is finished.

If you have any questions or if you would like to take action on this great deal...give us a call at 703-250-0382 or send an email to [email protected]

Are you backing up your data? Have you tested it?

Are you backing up your data? Have you tested it?

Are you backing up your data? Have you tested it?

If you do not currently backup your data on a regular basis TechMedX highly recommends that you do. Hard disk failure is more and more prevalent and it can be very expensive to try and recover data after a hardware failure. TechMedX recommends Carbonite as an offsite backup provider. Please see www.techmedx.com/backup for more details.

If you do have a regular backup routine than the beginning of a new year is a great time to test your backup. At TechMedX we feel that your backup is only as good as your last restore. If you are not regularly testing your backup you could find that it is not working when you need it the most. Too many times we have seen people find out that their back up has failed, after they have a data loss. To prevent this, TechMedX recommends a periodic test restore. This test restore process does 2 very important things.

#1. It ensures the backup is viable, and running as it should.
#2. It ensures that you know what to do in the event of a data loss.

To test your backup TechMedX recommends creating a test file in a program such as Word. Create a new file and call it "Testing my backup". Allow a few days to pass so that your automatic backup process backs up that file. After a few days have pasted delete the test file. Now using your backup recovery process try to restore that test file. If you can do that successfully than you have fully completed the test. Congratulations, everything works and you're an expert!! If it does not work, or you are unable to complete the process you should reevaluate the process to make sure everything is working as it should.

If you currently do not have a backup, or would like some assistance preforming your test restore please contact us at [email protected] or 703-250-0382.

Is your Windows 10 update trying or failing to install?

With the recent release of Windows 10 we have found that the new operating system is being downloaded as an important Windows update for some computers. You may not be aware that your computer is trying to install this update and in the process, failing to do so properly.

The below picture shows a computer that has been failing to install the update for several days. TechMedX can assist with checking your computer and preventing it from attempting the installation if it is. We can also help you install the new Windows 10 operating system if you would like to upgrade. The Windows 10 upgrade is free for the 1st year of its release date (released July 29, 2015).

If you would like help installing the new Windows 10 operating system or if you would like to stop this Windows update from trying to install please give our office a call at 703-250-0382 to set up an appointment for a technician to help you.

Our 1st impression of Windows 10

Our 1st impression of Windows 10

Our 1st impression of Windows 10

Here at TechMedX we have received many questions about Windows 10 and we wanted to take a moment to give our first impressions of this new Windows Operating System.

Windows 10's largest feature is the much awaited return of the traditional Windows "Start" button. After receiving a lot of feedback about the tiled "Start" screen (also known as Metro) Microsoft has returned to a more traditional way of navigating Windows. If you are a tablet user Windows 10 does still offer the touch friendly interface, however on a desktop platform it takes a back seat, as it should.

Windows 10 does have some other minor features like border-less windows for some applications and the introduction of Cortana, web software based "personal assistant" that some may find helpful or intrusive.

So on to "The Big Question"... Should you upgrade to Windows 10?

Unfortunately there is not a one answer fits all to this question, but here are some guidelines to help you.

Is your computer less than 3 years old?
Are you unhappy with the way your computer currently operates?
Do you like to try new and different operating systems?
Do you use just standard programs (no older legacy or industry specific programs)?

If you answered "NO" to more than one of these questions you should NOT upgrade to Windows 10, or expect some issues along the way.

If you have Windows 8.1 the upgrade should go smoothly. For Windows 7 users the upgrade has failed on us a few times, but if it does, Windows 10 does a good job of restoring the current operating system. We have also had some smooth upgrades, so it could go either way. Also if you find that you do not like Windows 10, there is a way you can switch back to your old operating system within the first month without losing any programs or files (Microsoft does say that some programs could be lost, but in our testing everything remained working properly).

To help our clients decide if Windows 10 is right for them, TechMedX has upgraded our guest computer at our office. We welcome you to come take a closer look and use Windows 10 before you upgrade. Please give our office a call to set up a time to come and take a look.

As always TechMedX recommends you have a good backup of your personal files, and preforming a system image backup would be especially helpfully in case something does go wrong. For help with either of these or to discuss your individual situation in more detail feel free to give us a call to schedule a consultation.

Macs can get infections too.

While Mac computers are less vulnerable to computer viruses they are not immune to Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) or infections. These two pictures (location and IP address blacked out for security) are examples of infections that TechMedX found on 2 Mac computers.

Don't be fooled by calling the phone number that is provided on the pop up. These people will do more harm to your computer than good. Please call a trusted technician or TechMedX to remove infections from your computer.

Rest assured that TechMedX got these computers cleaned up and running smoothly and we can do this for you as well.

TechMedX is the best. They are very responsive, highly knowledgeable and very thorough. Well worth the money.
Shawn Wyatt continues to wield his magic as he helped me not only set-up my new laptop but also solve the problem of my landline phone's constantly ringing and the answering machine not picking up to answer the phone. As for the other issue I had, it has to be addressed by the cable company. Well done, Shawn! You're always welcome in my home!😄
