Leafspot showing up on Hydrangea macrophylla. This one is a Cercospora but several other fungi attack this plant. Commercial growers should be on a preventative schedule by now and home growers might consider spraying with labeled fungicides if they have had an extreme problem in past years. It is cosmetic and plants usually are not killed.

It is the time of year when hunters start getting out in the woods to prepare food plots and take care of camps and deer stands. Be careful of some of the hazards in the woods this time of year.In one day this past week, I encountered all three in one day. Rattlesnakes, wasps, poison ivy, and ticks.

Blossom end rot is a common malady on tomatoes and can be especially problematic with container grown tomatoes . Symptoms are caused by a lack of calcium in developing fruit at a critical stage. This lack of calcium can be caused by either low levels in the soil or lack of enough water to move Ca in the soil to the fruit. Often home gardeners neglect to lime their container gardens and containers tend to dry out faster than in ground plantings so water stress and blossom end rot is more likely.
