Quimper - French Faience a la Bretagne

Announcing our December 8, 2019 Fine Asian Art and Antiques auction, now open for preview.
~
Two Seated Luohan, 20th Century
~
First pictured is a porcelain luohan by Zeng Longsheng. While originally modeled after the 18 arhats or luohan that followed Siddhārtha Gautama during his lifetime, luohan have evolved to feature hundreds of depictions and character attributes, making the exact naming less important than the lesson demonstrated by the luohan depiction. Because of his scroll, this is perhaps a Kànjīng Luóhàn, the Arhat Who Reads Scripture.
~
The second image is of a Shí Wàn luohan with opened hand. The original item placed in his hand is now missing, but this could have been a scroll, fruit, flower, incense, or an alms bowl, depending on the intended message of the sculptor.
~
Registration for the December 8th auction will begin on November 25th, more information through link in bio.

Lithograph, Intaglio, or Screen Print? What's the difference?
A poster we were recently cataloguing sparked a lighthearted but increasingly academic debate about the techniques used to produce works on paper in the 20th century. While trying to determine the specific technique used to create the poster in question, we found ourselves describing to one another the differentiating factors among lithographs, serigraphy, intaglio, to name a few. We closely examined the elements that we had in front of us: paper used, texture of the paper, how the ink adhered to the sheet, viewing the image edges to look for embossing, ink transfer on the edges, and how uniform the lines were throughout the piece, eventually deciding that the poster was, indeed, a lithograph from the 1920's...

Kay/Univox Effector Guitar, Late 1970s-Early 1980s
~
Clearly more than inspired by Gibson construction, the Kay/Univox Effector guitar offered in Sears catalogs during the 1970s-Early 1980s borrowed the familiar Les Paul design, split diamond headstock inlay, and control panel from the Recording model to create something rather different. More akin to the Vox Starstream in electronics, built-in circuitry for the Effector allow a player to control phasing, echo, tremolo, wah, fuzz, and whirlwind (voices to mimic a rotating Leslie speaker).
~
The owner has removed the factory brown sunburst finish and changed out the faux-humbuckers (originally a single, single-coil pickup placed within a humbucker mounting bracket and cover) with hot rail pickups, creating an even more unique take on an already unique guitar.

Games People Play
Games have long been a part of the human story. They are one of our oldest forms of social interaction, transcending culture, place and time. These days, nearly all games are electronic, from video games to the online solitaire on your cell phone. While some board games are still perennial favorites, such as Chess, Monopoly, and Risk, family game nights often look very different than they did even ten or twenty years ago...

Game of Mail, Express, or Accommodation by McLoughlin Bros., 1895 ~
Created just 26 years after the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, this game captures the excitement felt by 19th Century Americans as the 44 states and remaining contiguous territories became connected by rail. Players are assigned to deliver goods by either mail, express, or accommodation train, highlighting the differences between the methods of travel and giving opportunities to change rail lines along their destination route. ~
As stated in the game’s instructions, “This is a game, which, besides furnishing an entertaining pastime, will, incidentally, impart to the players a considerable amount of geographical and statistical information.” As population has ebbed and flowed along railway stops over the past 124 years, the game board offers an insight to American urbanization as the 20th century dawned. Despite quicker methods of travel, Americans can still enjoy excursion by rail to 46 states and view America from the ground perspective. ~

Like many animals, the lion has multiple meanings in different cultures. In the west, the wild lion is referred to as “king” of the jungle; associated with royalty and nobility. In China, these qualities led the lion to become a protective guardian figure...

Inside and Outside Contemporary Inuit Art
Pudlo Pudlat’s block print of a musk-ox in the snow seems at first glance to depict a humorous creature enjoying a playful constitutional on a snowy day. The giant creature appears to skid across the Arctic landscape on ridiculously small feet with splayed toes, entirely out of proportion with the heavy, shaggy pelt and head of the musk-ox. Nevertheless, the musk-ox exerts a riveting effect on its viewers, transforming them into affectionate admirers even without their knowing. The print does not so much grow on its audience as grapple them into camaraderie, inviting them into not merely a scene of humor but more importantly, a sense of the Arctic and its cultures full of life, animation, and humanity...

Never-Ending Napoleon: The Enduring Magnetism of the Doomed French Emperor
Having just recently watched – not for the first time – the BBC two-part TV edition of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, Napoleon and the Napoleonic Wars have been much on my mind. It seems all the more fitting, then, for me to compose a short blog post on some of the Napoleon-related items in our upcoming Around the World in 80+ Lots auction.
This auction has no fewer than three lots related to that rather infamous, and famously short, Corsican, whose meteoric rise in French politics following the end of the Terror of the French Revolution culminated with his coronation as the Emperor of France, and a military campaign across Europe that was ultimately defeated by the Russian Winter and the decimation of his Grande Armée, which had conscripted individuals from nations across Europe...

Ju Ming and the Expression of His Tai Chi Sculptures
This October Around the World in 80+ Lots auction features not one but two diminutive copies of monumental works by two well-known artists (the copies produced by the artists themselves). Where the organic, spear-headed form of Jacques Lipchitz’s Study for Peace on Earth pushes the energy of the statue upward and toward a more positive hope for future human interactions, the compact, boxy form of the Tai Chi sculpture by the Taiwanese artist Ju Ming embodies the often difficult to comprehend juxtaposition within the martial art of stillness and motion, containing bundles of potential energy within its jagged, square cut torso and floating arms while at the same time demonstrating the Tai Chi principles of rootedness and softness...

Song Dynasty, Silver, and Celebrity: Huang Yan's "Princess Diana," 2008
Princess Diana rests on the mantel at Oakridge. The oil on canvas piece, painted by the Chinese artist Huang Yan in 2008, fittingly ties together the gallery’s upcoming auction—Around the World in 80+ Lots. Her title carries the weight of the House of Windsor and her face, painted as a porcelain canvas for a definitively Chinese pastoral, marks the history of British imperialism in the region. As political and economic changes across the globe shift not only the borders of seemingly unassailable alliances like the European Union, but also understandings of gender, nationality, and culture, the warm humanity in the eyes of Yan’s “Princess Diana” and confidence in her smile reassure those in her presence that beauty can be found in the unexpected and that new ideas can still compliment established tradition...

Peace on Earth: A Portable Monument
The artist known as Jacques Lipchitz was born Chaim Jacob Lipchitz in Druskininkai, Russia (now Lithuania) in 1891. Lipchitz’s parents had grand ambitions for the boy’s future, his father envisioning a career in engineering, while his mother hoped for a more artistic calling. While young Chaim showed an aptitude for engineering, his career was decided when he encountered the work of the French avant-garde movement and became fascinated with the innovative principles of design and artistic expression espoused by artists like Pablo Picasso and Amadeo Modigliani. He soon moved to Paris to pursue an education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He became an established artist in France; however, he was forced to flee after the German invasion in 1940, eventually re-opening his studio in New York...

Are Chefs Artists?
Netflix has been adding more and more shows like Chef’s Table, The Mind of a Cook, The Great British Baking Show, Ugly Delicious, The Final Table, Zumbo's Just Desserts, and many more because of the peak interest viewers have in food and the way chefs bring creativity into their dishes. So, is it safe to say that these men and women of the food world are Artists?
The simple answer: yes. Whether they’re a 3 Michelin Star chef in France or a street vendor in Hong Kong, they create art out of ingredients the same way a sculptor uses marble. I guess there’s one thing that separates the two - you can’t eat marble...
