Lot 11, Swarovski, 4 Boxed Crystal Swans, Signed

Swarovski has been traditionally recognized by the iconic swan since the late-1980s. The idea to change to the swan came from the want to symbolize the purity and elegance of the crystal that Swarovski is so well known for.

This set is estimated at $150-250 and will be up for auction in our Winter Art, Antiques and Silver sale on December 12, 2020.

Lot 248, Chinese Famille Rose Vase, Guangxu

The lotus flowers, bats, peaches, and Shou medallions ornamenting this vase are typical decorations for Shang, or 'appreciation' vases. Shang vases were given as gifts by the emperor to court officials who had proven themselves free of corruption, thus the auspicious imagery all-over the vase.

A vase like this would have been prominently displayed to make clear the emperor's favor. The practice of giving Shang vases dates back at least to the Yongzheng period of the Qing dynasty, and was made exclusively at the Emperor's behest.

This vase will be featured in our Winter Fine Asian Art & Antiques auction this weekend, November 14-15. For more information, visit www.oakridgeauctiongallery.com.

Lot 152, Chinese Copper Red '3 Fish' Stem Bowl, Yongzheng

The Yongzheng court of the Qing dynasty was fascinated by patterns and forms of the Ming dynasty, especially the Xuande period, which marked the apex of imperial porcelain production.

The three red fish on this white-ground stem bowl derive from one of the patterns produced by Xuande kilns, which became popular in the 6th year of the Yongzheng emperor's rule. The red fish are slightly raised and highly abstracted.

The stem bowl will be featured as part of our upcoming Winter Fine Asian Art & Antiques auction on November 14-15, 2020. Browse the catalog and register to bid at https://oakridgeauctiongallery.com/auction/43

Lot 105, Rare Chinese White Jade Carved Pendant, Song

The texture of this wonderful white jade carved pendant is light and lacy - like a Florentine cookie or a fine doily. Interlaced layers in high and low relief shape the figures of a boy holding a ruyi wand and riding a dragon through the wispy clouds.

The pendant dates to the Song Dynasty, 960-1279, a period of economic growth as well as technological and cultural achievement. Artwork of the period was lavish and extravagant, aptly demonstrated by the dynamic and almost romantic lines of this carving.

The carving will be featured in our upcoming Winter Fine Asian Art & Antiques auction on November 14-15, 2020. For more information, visit https://oakridgeauctiongallery.com/upcoming

Lot 44, Chinese Jade Butterfly-Form Belt Buckle, 18-19th Century

Butterflies are one of many auspicious animal motifs in Chinese culture, representing immortality as well as conjugal bliss.

Among the legends which have added to the butterfly's mystique is the Chinese folktale of the Butterfly Lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. The tragic, poignant love story relates how the two lovers meet and are parted, until Zhu Yingtai, passing by Liang Shanbo's grave on her way to marry another man, casts herself into his tomb, their reunited spirits arising from the tomb as a pair of butterflies.

This particular belt buckle avails itself of the butterfly form, depicting two individuals on either side of its central axis, hands raised toward one another. The link between the two figures is heightened by the buckle's own purpose as a physical link and the encompassing butterfly shape.

Lot 236, Boxed Mickey Cyclist with Pluto

This tin and celluloid Mickey Mouse riding a tricycle dates all the way back to the 1930's, produced in Japan for the Western export market.

That makes it nearly as old as the Walt Disney corporation itself, which was founded in 1923, with the character of Mickey Mouse officially created in 1928.

The toy realized $3,250 in our recent Fine Art, Antiques, and Collectibles auction on October 17, 2020. For more sale results, visit https://oakridgeauctiongallery.com/auction/41.

Lot 270, Anglo Indian Sterling Casket

The mark on this box, OM and Baroda, likely indicated that this piece was crafted by Omersee Mawjee, whose sons relocated the family silversmithing business to Baroda in the 1920's. Among their patrons were members of the British Army and those associated with the English living in India.

The casket, which shows two Anglo-Indian palatial buildings on either side in detailed repousse, sold for $4,000 in our recent Fine Art, Antiques, and Collectibles auction on October 17, 2020. For more sale results, visit https://oakridgeauctiongallery.com/auction/41.

The form of the suzuri-bako, or inkstone box, dates back as far as the 9th century, with implements and ornamentation growing more elaborate over the centuries.

The suzuri-bako sold for $400 in our recent Fine Art, Antiques, and Collectibles auction on October 17, 2020. See more auction results at https://oakridgeauctiongallery.com/auction/41.

Lot 163, Berlin Wool Work of Parrots, 19th Century

Canvas work, or needlework with stitches neatly gridded over the cross-lines of a canvas in cross- or tent stitch, was done as far back as the Middle Ages, but the early 19th century saw a number of variations. One of these, Berlin Wool Work or Berlin Work, was possible in part only because of the emergence of the first synthetic, or aniline, dyes.

The craft developed in early 19th century Germany, using yarns dyed in bright and varied colors in Berlin. It quickly became popular in England and then across the ocean in America.

Works like this pair of parrots on a flowering branch would be executed primarily in slant, or tent stitch, supplemented with cross stitch and special, tufted stitches like Surrey stitch to add depth and shape to the figures. This particular example dates from around 1860.

Oakridge Auction Gallery is different from the majority of art galleries that I have visited. First, it has the inside design of a home in the valley, classic design without bragging about it. They have an excellent staff, who have the ability to give a potential participant in the auction a reason to buy. In other words, they know what they are talking about and most important they can tell the original from the copy. Soft spoken and always willing to please. Give them five stars and get your check book and credit cards. Also, suggest taking a look at some of the stuff that comes up in November.
