Live from Italy with Venica & Venica and GRAPE + BEAN, Zoom Tasting Event, Saturday, September 18

When done properly, Friuli and, more specifically, Collio, is one of the most exciting wine appellations in the world. The combination of native grapes, soils, and climate can produce wines of unparalleled purity, richness, and texture without giving up a bit of acid or freshness, and they can age and evolve for decades. Founded in 1930, Venica & Venica is one of the best producers in is this area and has been chosen as the best white wine producer in Italy more than once. They just celebrated their 90th year!

The Venica & Venica estate currently farms 40 hectares of vines on the typical Ponca soils (marl and sandstone) of Friuli, spread over several hills and comprised of many varied micro-climates. The third generation, Giampaolo, is now in charge of the farming and winemaking and has overseen their conversion to organics.

Join us for this tasting event, Live from Italy with Giampaolo and enjoy 4 different White wines including their top Cru wine.

If you've never done a Zoom wine tasting with GRAPE + BEAN, they are fun, easy, and delicious!

California Zoom Wine Tasting Event with GREEN & RED, Saturday, August 28, 2021 5-6:15pm

Join GRAPE + BEAN for another great Wine Tasting event via Zoom! We are very pleased to introduce you to new vintages from one of Napa Valley’s most unique and interesting wineries, GREEN & RED, founded in 1977.

GREEN & RED winery and its style are a product and a movement that began during the Summer of Love in Berkeley when founder, Jay Hemmingway, and his group of friends, which included Alice Waters, set out to recreate the food and beverage traditions of Europe and reintroduce the concepts of fresh ingredients and passion into California cuisine. Some of the group created places like Chez Panisse and The Cheese Board and Jay headed into the Napa hills and started planting vines. GREEN & RED has been a family winery from the start with Jay and his daughter, Tobin, hand bottling and corking the first vintage. Over the years, their commitment to expressing the best of what their part of Napa can offer completely unadulterated, protecting the land, and creating wines for the table has earned them a vaunted position in the wine world. Well known for their own wines, the winery also supplies fruit to some of the most sought after producers in California including Turley and Ravenswood for special vineyard designates and has provided the "house" Zinfandel to Chez Panisse for more than 20 years. GREEN & RED is as much a part of the history of California cuisine and the history of Napa Valley as any I can think of and, with almost 50 vintages in the books, they produce some of the most interesting and delicious wines you will find. Control of the winery has now passed to Jay's daughter, Tobin, since his passing in 2019.

Join us along with winery owner Tobin Hemingway live from Green & Red winery in Napa Valley, along with GRAPE + BEAN Owner David Gwathmey, and our wine partner John Grimsley for this in-depth tasting event via Zoom. Hello FB Friends! Happy to announce our next tasting event we'll be bringing to you live from California, winemaking Legend Robert Foley, Saturday, April 24, 2021, 6:00-7:15pm
GRAPE + BEAN is very excited to welcome back Robert Foley, of Robert Foley Vineyards.
This rock-star winemaker is one of the most dedicated and entertaining men in the business. His stunning Howell Mountain property produces some of the most consistently fantastic wines in Napa Valley. Robert Foley began his wine making career in the Napa Valley in 1977, working at a number of highly regarded Napa Valley wineries including the famous Pride Mountain Vineyards, where he spent 15 years as founding wine maker. During this period, he also created the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, School House, and Engel Family wines. In 1997, Robert Foley and his wife Kelly settled on the top of Howell Mountain on the east side of Napa Valley and launched Robert Foley Vineyards.
As with many of the winemakers featured at GRAPE + BEAN, Foley is committed to making expressive wines, using traditional techniques and lots of heart and soul too. We first fell in love with Foley's wines, but the man himself is also a delight. He has visited GRAPE + BEAN many times over the last 10 years, and we are thrilled and lucky to have Robert back (virtually) this April. Join us for what's sure to be a wonderful and delicious evening as we taste and learn from the man himself!

Hello FB Friends!
Thanks to all of you who joined us for our recent Sangiovese virtual tasting event, we had over 200 people online in attendance tasting together. Now with spring nearing, we want to do a tasting from somewhere we haven't shared with you before.
So I am happy to announce our next Virtual Zoom Wine Tasting, Saturday, March 20, 2021 5:00-6:00pm and we are focusing on the grape varietal Assyrtiko, the indigenous grape of the volcanic island of Santorini!
Escape with GRAPE + BEAN to the Island of Santorini, Greece. Santorini is one of the most surreal vine growing environments on the planet. The island sits on an active volcano, with extremely young and infertile soils, with almost zero potassium and almost zero clay.
The climate of the island is hot Mediterranean, with very little rainfall during the growing season but plenty of sunlight and fierce winds. Without fog coming out of the caldera every morning, providing moisture in the most sophisticated drip irrigation system provided by nature, very little vegetation can survive in Santorini.
Argyros Estate, was founded in 1903 and passed down to the founder’s son in 1950, who tripled the estate from 5 to 15 acres. In 1974, Yiannis Argyros, the third-generation owner then took over. The estate vineyards are located primarily in Episkopi and Pyrgos, prime locations for the Assyrtiko grape. These ungrafted vines range in age from 30 to over 150 years, and are trained into basket-shaped bowls, a traditional technique called ""kouloura"". Today, Mathew Argyros, the fourth generation of family winemakers, continues his father's legacy by making legendary wines from Assyrtiko and other indigenous Santorinian varietals, using traditional techniques.
The vines of Argyros Estate are farmed organically, without using pesticides. The soil of the island of Santorini is also naturally immune to Phylloxera and many other vineyard pests, reducing the need for synthetic herbicides + pesticides. Estate Argyros practices sustainable viticulture, using composted grape must as fertilizer, and plowing the vineyards with mules.
Join us on March 20 where we will taste three very different and special wines made from Assyrtiko grapes including the rare, spellbinding Argyros, “Monsignori” Santorini made from 200-year-old vines. The wine tasting, perfect for sharing, is designed for 2 people, along with some GRAPE + BEAN cheeses and other small accompaniments to pair with the wines.

Hey Friends!
Let's get together again and taste some wine and have some laughs. Next event is "The Wonders of Sangiovese", Virtual Zoom Wine Tasting, Saturday, February 20. I hope you will join us!
Description
Sangiovese-- one of the world's most noble, notable, and interesting grapes! Like Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir, Sangiovese is considered to be not only one of the most noble wine grapes in the world, but also one of the greatest translators of time and place.
When you taste a wine made properly from Sangiovese, you will know at once where it was grown, what the soils were, what the climate was like during the year, and so many other things. Sangiovese is like a collection of books, events, or stories and if you know how to understand its language-- just one wine from Sangiovese can open the door to a new world and a tome of stories. You might ask how one learns to speak Sangiovese and we have the answer!
Join us on February 20 for a discussion with Italian Wine Scholar, Giuseppe Locascio. Giuseppe is one of the most passionate, engaging, and knowledgeable folks we know in the wine industry and his understanding of Sangiovese is incredible. He teaches classes and conducts seminars around the world for some of the brightest minds in wine, yet has the ability to easily connect with even casual wine enthusiasts and share his knowledge without all the jargon or mysticism. If you love Sangiovese or have ever wanted to learn more of the noble grape and concepts like terroir, you do not want to miss this event.
We will taste four different wines made from Sangiovese from vastly different areas including one of the highest vineyards in the Apennine Mountain Range, a property that has been around since the Norman invasion of England, and two vintages of a blend of 28 clones of Sangiovese made in a 2000+ year old Etruscan tomb converted into a wine cellar. The wine tasting, perfect for sharing, is designed for 2 people, along with some GRAPE + BEAN cheeses and charcuterie to pair with the wines.

Hey FB Friends! Happy New Year!
Starting the year off with one of my very favorite people in the whole world of wine! She is a force to be reckoned with and we love her! Join us as we welcome back to GRAPE + BEAN (Virtually this time) our friend Elisabetta and taste some fabulous wines!

Elisabetta Fagiuoli- Italian Winemaking Icon, Virtual Zoom Wine Tasting, Saturday, January 30, 2021 5:00-6:00pm

Winemaker, Elisabetta Fagiuoli is one of the most famous winemakers, and people, in Italy. She was the first woman to own and operate a commercial winery in Italy and a mentor and aspirational figure to many who have come behind her.

Elisabetta left Genova, Italy in 1965, traveled to San Gimignano and began the creation of what is now Montenidoli (The Mountain of Little Nests). Montenidoli is a 200-acre property that has 24 acres under vine and another 15+ operating as an organic farm. The history of the property, however, is much older. The first people to inhabit it and make wine there were the Etruscans, followed by the Romans, and the Knights Templar.

Elisabetta and her late companion, Sergio, spent 18 years clearing the property little by little and by hand with nine children. They did everything by hand, which they have continued to do even as the winery and the wines of Elisabetta have become famous around the world.

For this special tasting, you will enjoy a total of 5 different wines (2 reds, 2 whites, 1 dry rose) with 6 oz pours of each wine, (perfect for sharing--designed for 2 people), along with some GRAPE + BEAN cheeses and charcuterie to pair with the wines.
