A new trial tomato for this year - the Russian variety Azoychka. It has done well enough to earn a second year of trying, hopefully with less rain as the dreaded blight has started to set in :( Still, there is enough fruit set already to make it into early September.

My friend Cameronne Taillon came out to photo my work on the farm the other day. 14+ inches of rain in the last 30 days is not helping, but deliveries have started on time this last Friday. Fingers crossed!

Any gardener will tell you, usually the first tomatoes of the season are small (cherry) and then get bigger as the weeks go on. This is my first, a Black Tula. Is this a sign of things to come?

Here is the same plant as before, but 2 weeks later. It takes no time for the tomatoes to go from a thumbnail to the size of your fist, but then comes the agony as you wait and wait for that first blush of color.

Pic from approximately a week ago. All tomatoes are now in the ground, with plenty of flowers and (a few) baby tomatoes visible. Everything still looks good for a 4th of July kickoff.

The season is coming! These were started in the basement during the cold snowy days in Feb & March, and here they are today. Planting should start next week and then it is approximately 2 more months until the season starts - stay tuned!

As with all good things, sadly, this season has come to an end. Unlike most hybrids, heirlooms have little disease resistance, and in the end, the blight was too much to overcome. Yet every setback is a learning opportunity and the lessons learned this year ensure the next will be even better. Thanks to all who enjoyed the (literal) fruits of my labor in 2014, and I look forward to serving you again in 2015.

The humble Cherokee Purple. Many had never seen a tomato any color other than red before these guys were "rediscovered" 25 years ago. Now its so common you can buy plants each spring at the local home depot. But no matter where it comes from, its unique almost "smoky" taste makes it one of the best.

This years green when ripe tomatoes (L to R) Green Zebra, Berkeley Tie Dye, and Aunt Ruby's German Green. People either love or hate the greens and their zingy taste. Never tried one before? Get out to any of the establishments listed here and see what you think.

This week I am pleased to announce deliveries to Bastille Restaurant in North Old Town. This likely will be the last restaurant added as it is getting late in the growing season - so be sure to get these wonderful heirloom tomatoes while the getting is good!

The downside of heirlooms is they blemish easily and I end up with a good deal of tomatoes I dont think are of restaurant quality. The upside is that it makes for an epic "BLT night" at home!

This weeks featured tomato, the Pink Berkeley Tie Dye. In the heirloom tomato world, the prettier looking ones are usually not among the better tasting. However, this tomato breaks the mold. Not only is this guy good to look at, it is probably among my "top 10" in terms of taste.

I am happy to announce that in the past few weeks, deliveries have been made to The Light Horse here in Old Town, and Evening Star Cafe and Market 2 Market in Del Ray. There likely will be other places added on an occasional basis as the heirloom tomato crop swings into full gear. As always, please be sure to visit these and other establishments noted here that support the local foods movement.

A new type of tomato for this season - Costoluto Genovese. These guys are heavily pleated, kind of like a mini pumpkin. While the taste is good to above average, the production is truly amazing!

07/11/2014

I am pleased to announce the first crop has come in and in the last week, regular deliveries have started for Vermillion, La Fromagerie, Del Ray Cafe, and La Bergerie, (with more places to come). These restaurants have made a commitment to locally grown produce which makes this venture possible. Next time you are headed out for a night in Alexandria, please consider any of these establishments who care about this community as much as you do.

06/27/2014

First tomatoes are ripening up now and deliveries will start next week. Stay tuned for where to go in the Alexandria area to enjoy the most delicious, locally grown heirloom tomatoes!

All tomatoes got in the ground in late April and are now looking good.
