#MemberMonday: Jodi McShan, AAF, AIFD, CFD, PFCI, of McShan Florist in Dallas, TX!

In 1948, Jodi’s grandparents, L.A. McShan, Jr. and Velma McShan, opened McShan Florist in Dallas, TX. Jodi grew up at the shop and started working at a young age, proudly getting $1 an hour for doing random jobs, and continued working at McShan’s through high school. 🌻

Jodi went on to pursue a law degree and worked at a law firm before returning to McShans. Now, in addition to running her own law firm (with 2 associates), Jodi works full time at the shop with her father, serving as the Vice President, a buyer and more. Jodi says that her legal background has been extremely helpful to the shop, especially in the past year as they navigated COVID-19 regulations.

Fun facts:
-Since opening in 1948, McShan’s has done flowers, in some form, for every sitting U.S. President.
-They have dogs at the store almost every day – Jodi has two dogs and one of them, Marty, is the official greeter for customers. 🐶
-Every year Santa comes to the shop on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and most years they have a horse and fire truck for kids to take pictures.

Jodi’s favorite:
-Thing about being an SAF member: The people - SAF provides an outlet to meet others in the industry that she may not normally meet like out-of-state growers, researchers, and even out-of-state retailers. These relationships have helped Jodi on many different levels – providing a sounding board, advice, business resources and friendships.
-Flower: It depends on the season for Jodi. It varies from rose lilies to hydrangea to peonies! 🌹

Dramm Echter Farms is a family run business that carries over 150 items on a yearly basis. It was founded by Jim Echter and Gene Dramm in 1972 and will celebrate its 50th business anniversary in 2022! 🎉

Juan Carlos started working for Dramm Echter Farms over 23 years ago. He began as the warehouse manager then moved into sales, marketing, and became involved in buying and importing flowers from farms in South America. Now, Juan Carlos manages the sales team and buying for the company.

Dramm Echter Farms is making an exciting move this fall! They will be transferring their gerberas and spray rose production site to Baja, CA and will relocate their warehouse from Encinitas to Carlsbad, CA. 🌸

The value of a wire service. For example, around 2004, Teleflora created the America's Favorite Mom contest. I thought it was brilliant. A reason for the world to think about flowers, a contest around Mother's Day. For the next 10 straight years, we piggybacked on the idea with Sarasota's Favorite Mom, reached out to Phoenix, St Louis, Cincinnati, Miami, Orlando, and more. I had sponsors and the top one was a custom 1 of a kind pendant created by a local jeweler who was also featured and involved in all the media. This was picked up by new sources too. People had to submit their stories about their mom and get votes. All the while, Beneva was gathering Email addresses and growing our connection to our community. You can't just look to corner your market with delivery, you must be a part of your community. We also had Helping Hands where we donated 5% to local schools and organisations when someone ordered and mentioned them. We had deep roots in Sarasota and for that I thank Teleflora. We as an industry need to see the good in the support given to us from with our industry. For that I would always say, "Thank you Teleflora".
