Out and about today combining biz and pleasure .. one thing we’re keeping secret for now, but part of our excursion included a visit to The Old Lucketts Store to pay for our #luckettsspringmarket space and visit a couple friends shops! .
.
One of the shops was to visit and see Yvette FOUNDRY and her amazing store that she renovated last year at Lucketts! Sensory overload, yummilicious dark and moody, and always inspiring. Mr. Rust and Refind has been nudging me to include manly things at the shop and after seeing her man cave room, I am thinking oh yes! Y is a beautiful human.. a woman colleague in the business that is one of the good ones and brings out the smile in you.
.
Loved seeing her iconic British-inspired room (THE ROOM) and other spaces that include high end, modern, traditional and moody interiors, chesterfield furnishings and all things gift and home. I really went there to see her but have had my eye on this cute little British flag tote so got a two-fer! My happy for today ... and that awesome hug! Definitely recommend visiting…her shop is my cup of tea (pun intended) with just a bit of funky flair to make you smile... oh, and she’s hiring!

Vignettes and themes. When pulling items for a small display at markets like this one at Fleetwood Farm Winery yesterday, I try not to overwhelm with too many items, but still want to showcase a wide variety of a sampling of our offerings at our #rustandrefindartisanmarket . I quickly grabbed items to take, and started on this grouping. So, it was interesting to hear comments from the Fleetwood staff about the discussion of what our theme was. It’s like when someone shows you those weird evaluation pictures and asks “What do you see?”, and you’ll get several responses. So, we heard that someone said it was a beach themed table, and someone else said, oh it was all about July 4th. It was, of course, a tie in to both but interesting still to hear what the take away is from people.
.
Great time, as always, at Fleetwood. We love their #farmtofleetwood events. I believe their next one is July 30! Stay tuned, and Happy Saturday!

PSA!! Oh no ... say it ain’t so! Another “we’ve been doing this for years” habit to change according to this recommendation. What say you?

No, your chicken does not need a rinse. September 27, 2019 Do you rinse raw chicken under the kitchen faucet before cooking it? Julia Child did it regularly, and rinsing chicken before prepping and cooking has become common practice in many households. A study from Drexel University found that appro...

My emotional month of June is almost over…(what do you mean Thank Goodness? 🤪). I just thank you for allowing me to share. You can tell what is important or the stages in our lives based on the posts, right? Baby pictures, grandbaby pictures. New house. New products. New business. Empty Nesting. And for me, as many of you know, our two daughters are in the military and each of their birthdays are in June.
.
My eldest celebrated her 27th a couple weeks ago as I recently posted …deployed on the USS Carl Vinson.
.
Today, my youngest celebrates her 23d, smack dab in the middle of airborne training at Fort Benning. She’s in the tower week, which leads to the actual “jump week” where they jump out of aircraft. I ask for prayers please…for her safety and endurance.
.
We are so proud of our LT Potts. Both the Navy and Army one (although one technically outranks the other). They both celebrated their recent birthdays in training/deployment and this mama misses them incredibly but I am so happy that they are doing well and doing what they want to do for now…before they homestead and grow the best and biggest tomatoes and have a menagerie of farm critters. That will make them happy, too.
..
Lauren has grown from a sassy pip-squeak playing dress up in her daddy’s Army boots to actually dressing up in them. The Army uniform. And my heart swells with pride. And, damn…doesn’t she look great? Happy Birthday Boo-Boo! Love, Mama and Daddy

#tiptuesday . The things you find along the way that you love and make you happy can be displayed throughout your home in many appealing ways. Small groups of 3-5, or en masse groupings (although I think the days of curio cabinets stuffed to the gills may be passé….please don’t shoot me); or spread around the home like my friend Michel (half of friend duo G & M Interiors ) has done. She loves demijohns and cloches that she’s collected from her travels in Europe and from friends’ shops (ahem…moi 🤪) and uses them as vases, to style bookshelves, placed in vignette groupings of books and beaded garlands surrounded with personal momentos and other European treasures. The green wine bottles tie into her design and style, and are functional, practical, and pretty all in one, telling her #collectedhome story. Purposeful but not contrived, and not just something “she bought” to fill the space. You, too, can incorporate your collected treasures a part of your home style and design. Don’t plop “baby” in a corner. 😃. Need help? Ask us for an #interiordesign consult.
.
And, if you love this look, the artisans at the #rustandrefindartisanmarket all have demijohns and bottles that you can add to or start your own collection. Come see us…we OPEN WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY from 11-4! #yourhomeyourstory

Ah, a Mule Chest! I have only come across one other I sold 7 or 8 years ago, and a collector snagged it right away. I started doing my research on them then, and decided to continue with finding the historical significance again with this one that I obtained recently from a family that was reluctant to let it go since it had been in their family for generations. She thought 1700s, but I believe it’s an 1800s fine specimen, and if you look online, not many to be found especially in this style…and they are valuable. Possibly New England, but could be from England.
.
The term Mule Chest in itself has stumped many historical researchers. The top three theories are that the bottom drawers were used to store “slippers”, which were called mules in the 17th and 18th centuries. The second theory suggests that since a mule is a hybrid of a horse and mule, and since this chest is a combination blanket and shoe storage, then it’s a hybrid chest of sorts. And the final thought is that mule is slang for someone who transports illegal/prohibited goods and that these chests often contained secret compartments to hide valuable or illegal items.
.
But, the common understanding of the use of these chests is that they were used to store out of season blankets and shoes, and used often since colonial homes did not have closets. They were functional pieces of furniture, and used often and perhaps not considered or treated as valuable or appreciated pieces so maybe that is why we rarely come across them. Not to be confused with the blanket chest, which evolved from the mule chest…in itself most mule chests will have the chest on top and one or two drawers on the bottom. Today, this would work for so many of our purposes: blankets, linens, toy chest, in the mudroom, as a side table perhaps.
.
Available soon on my Etsy shop and at the #rustandrefindartisanmarket !

Happy Daddy’s Day! There are fathers and then there are daddy’s, and Mr. Rust and Refind is the true embodiment of a Daddy! As the second pic shows (it’s our Kardashian-like Christmas pic one year), he loves being the King surrounded by “all his girls.” I have seen no man, arguably because many of you today are toasting these wonderful men in your lives, that loves his family more, is as dedicated, emotional, and wonderful to his daughters. One specific, true testament to his character is that no matter how angry he would be at them, or they at him, he would ALWAYS make him kiss and/or bid him good night. Always. And, one day, I will have to collect all the pictures of his girls kissing their daddy. For important occasions. Holidays. Vacations. Or just whenever. They may have snooted from time to time, but they will remember and cherish these moments someday, if not now. I could not have asked for a better Father/Daddy to my daughters. Ever. Even if he’s turned into the biggest cry-baby and can barely hold his &** together these days relating to his girls as they traverse their adult, military lives. 🤪❤️
.
Cheers 🍺 to all the Daddy’s out there. Happy Father’s Day!

A Collected Home Tells Your Story

Rust and Refind: is about finding old things again and "rustifying" or refining them. Redefining, Repurposing, Refreshing, Recycling, Renewing, Refinishing. These “R" words that update old, warn, dated pieces and merging them with new and modern. It's the juxtaposition of rustic and refined and incorporating into a harmonious setting. Rust and Refind suggests an eclectic mix of finds, or the opposites attract of home decor, both sides of the railroad tracks, if you will, such as a barn door and a chandelier. A home that has an eclectic, collected-over-time feel is a home that tells a story, something that Brenda is passionate about in home styling.

Born and raised in upstate New York, Brenda has always had a passion for decorating homes and would pen and paper design her "bedroom" and future home since she was a little girl (no Pinterest then). Since 18, however, she has primarily lived in the South and abroad and has been an Army wife since 1992, which included several moves and several homes. She learned to unpack, settle in and decorate each home quickly, and incorporate the collected broad and eclectic range of must haves from all her travels and assignments. Exposure to many styles around the world, along with years of watching home shows, perusing home magazines, managing an antique home décor shop, trolling antique shows/flea markets/barn sales, has inspired her design aesthetic and desire to help redesign the decor in the American home. She is a believer in the "Collected Home" and your home telling your story with new and old, sentimental, and adopted treasures.

Now retired from the military life and an empty nester, she and her husband are settled (for now) in Northern Virginia. A daughter is in flight school in the Navy, and another is in Army ROTC at The University of Tennessee allowing for much more time to be a creative. A fanatic about design and organization, finding and transforming treasures, and wanting to help others find and collect their own along the way lead to the first chapter of the Rust and Refind story when she hung her first sign at the now burned Mount Vernon Antique Center. Being in this business, she has also collected a lot of creative friends, which inspired her to open an Artisan Market where a few great creatives can gather and sell their product and be co-inspired and collectively inspire you in one location. Thus, a new chapter in the Rust and Refind book has started, and in July of 2018, the Rust and Refind Artisan Market was created, housing interior designers, furniture painters, craftsmen, fine artists, and more. She calls it the Talent-Filled, Fun-Filled, Drama-Free Zone. Located in charming Aldie, Virginia and open once a month for events, by appointment, workshops, and Paint Shop Wednesdays! SMILE AND MAKE LIFE FUN!
