IN THE MIDDLE:
Stoneware Sconce with Boy Motif by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son, Bornholm, Denmark

This exquisite stoneware sconce, designed by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son, features a charming boy holding an urn. In addition to holding a candle, this versatile sconce can be used as a wall-hung vase for a few flowers or branches, and it looks equally impressive even without candles or flowers.

This rare Michael Andersen ceramic figurine is executed with a stunning Persia glaze with a square-patterned glaze showcasing the special craquelé technique developed at Michael Andersen pottery in the 1930s.

The reverse side of the sconce is marked with the Michael Andersen & Son hallmark, featuring a shield with three fishes, which also represents the coat of arms for the town of Rønne on the island of Bornholm, where the pottery was situated. The piece is also marked with the initials “E” and “X” alongside the logo of Michael Andersen & Son.

Marianne Starck (1931-) joined Michael Andersen & Son in 1955 and became a pivotal artistic force, especially in stoneware production.

SCOTTIE THE RED DOG

Meet Scottie the red dog, crafted from the same triangular building pieces we use for our lampsculptures!

On the floor is this magnificent Scandinavian modern brown salt-glazed stoneware vase by Arthur Andersson. Adorned with zig-zag and striation relief patterns and inscribed with ”AWA, Wallåkra,”

On the sofa is an antique hand-woven Fars kilim. Its stunning design is versatile enough to serve as a bedspread, tapesty, drapery, or a rug.

On the floor is an exquisite mid-century modern high-pile rya rug titled ”Blåmussla” (Blue Mussel) that was made by Swedish textile artist Ingrid Jagarz for Marks Rya company in the 1960s. With its luxurious texture, crafted from premium “Kamgarn” Persian wool yarn on a cotton-linen base, this rug is soft, inviting, and built to last.

SOMETHING TO BRIGHTEN UP THE DARK

Our Multilampa workshops bring together organizations, companies, schools, and interior designers to create lamp sculptures, fostering collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

Here’s how it went with children aged 9-10 at Gamla Uppsala School, Sweden:

PREPARATION:
The children collected their own household plastic waste before the workshop.
The waste was remelted into plastic sheets, which were covered with silk paper.

WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES:
The children chose a theme; for this project, it was nature.
They painted on the remelted plastic sheets.
Using a hand-driven punch, they cut triangular building pieces.
They sketched a design, deciding to create a cat lamp sculpture.

ASSEMBLY:
The children constructed the lamp according to their design.
The result? A stunning cat-shaped lamp sculpture!
