TRAVEL LIBRE VISITS SARIAYANAS AND ADA'S GARDEN SPA, HOTEL AND RESORT

By Eric J. Dedace

On the early evening of Tuesday, February 4, 2014, upon arrival in Sariaya from Dolores, the Travel Libre production crew accompanied by the Sariaya Tourism Council Board proceeded to the Ada’s Garden Spa, Hotel and Resort in Barangay Gibanga where they were welcomed by STC BOD Member Ms. Susan M. Caballes in the beautifully renovated reception area. After the necessary introductions and a few minutes of rest, they were invited to a hearty and delicious dinner which the eager host prepared herself, which was great treat for everyone. And through the ensuing conversations, it was learned that one of the group’s photographers, Mr. Jay Nava Ermitaño is a member and an Administrator of the FUNtastic Philippines FUNgroup of travel photographers who came to Sariaya in October 19 and 23, 2013 to document and photograph the town’s attractions for tourism promotion purposes. Likewise, and more interesting, the other photographer, Mr. Irvinne Redor is an invited choir member of the United Nations Singers of New York City, USA , who will be having a mini concert at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church in town on February 25th! As they say, this is a small world indeed! The rest of the team included writers Ms. Bopeep C. Espiritu and Ms. E.M. Tobias accompanied by the Quezon Provincial Tourism Office staff member Ms. Gillian P. Abadilla, and Ms. Allen Joy Saslayon, a St. Anne College BS Tourism student doing her on-the-job training with their office.

Right after dinner, the group proceeded to the SARIAYANAS Buri products showroom where they were given an introduction/ annotation on the DTI sponsored renaissance of the traditional buri industry in Sariaya by Ms. Caballes herself. They were then ushered into the igloo type, Mount Banahaw Red Soil dry sauna facility and were made to go inside it to have a feel of its therapeutic qualities. After that, the group crossed into the SARIAYANAS production area where two female workers gave them an impromptu demonstration on hand weaving and the sewing of the woven substrate into bags. With that, the production work was stopped and the group agreed to leave at 5 in the morning to catch upon the Tayabas Bay sunrise at Barangay Bignay 2. As the STC people left for Sariaya town proper, the Travel Libre crew braced themselves for a great wellness treat, a free massage care of the attendants of the spa.

THE EUROPEAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF THE PHILIPPINES VISITS SARIAYANAS BURI PRODUCTS, AND ADA’S GARDEN SPA, HOTEL AND RESORT PART 1

By Eric J. Dedace

On the early afternoon of Wednesday, January 29, 2014, two representatives of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) visited SARIAYANAS Buri Products and Ada’s Garden Spa, Hotel and Resort in Barangay Gibanga, Sariaya, Quezon. Accompanied by Sir Eric of the Department of Trade and Industry Office in Quezon Province, they were Mr. Manolo F. Nicanor, the Manager, and Ms. Ma. Suzette Gamido, an Officer of the International Trade Fairs and Events Management, a subsidiary of the ECCP. They were on a mission to promote high grade Philippine made products abroad and they relied on the DTI to connect them to the right people and enterprises for the important undertaking. Ms. Susan Masilang – Caballes, Sariaya Tourism Council Board of Directors member and proprietress of SARIAYANAS and Ada’s Garden Spa, Hotel and Resort is an active partner of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) sponsored resurgence and upgrading of Sariaya’s traditional buri weaving industry, aside from being the proponent of the local wellness industry hereabouts.

Truly, it has been years since the DTI conducted a training on weaving decors from Buri starting early in the year 2009, which the Kalahi Cooperative of Barangay Gibanga led by Ms. Caballes availed and attended. On July of 2010, they started producing Buri slippers and for convenience, Mrs. Caballes lent sewing machines once used in their T shirt business in Cainta and from there, they joined the Rizal Association Trade Fair of October 2010 and were able to sell P22,000 worth of slippers. Moreover, at that time, the signature name of “Sariayanas” for the said line of buri products was coined for Mrs. Caballes by Mr. Randy Urlanda the Editor of Panorama Magazine who together with Ms. Cynthia Lazo of the DOT CALABARZON Office is a friend of hers from way back the Sariaya Quadri – Centennial Foundation days. With that the Provincial DTI office became very impressed and pleased with their accomplishment. and with that, its Director, Ms. Marcelina Alcantra introduced Mrs. Caballes to designers like Mr. Cesar Pasco and Mr. Rinel Batrallo who are experts in the use of Water Hyacinth and asked them to assist her in the Buri venture. On January 2011, the DTI commissioned these two designers and sponsored a seminar training for the weaving of high end quality buri bags participated in by Quezon towns such as Mauban, Sampaloc, Pagbilao, Tagkawayan and Sariaya, and it proved very helpful to the Kalahi Cooperative of Barangay Gibanga. As such, the cooperative became part of the Bayong Development Program of the Department of Trade and Industry. And with that, everything was all systems go for the grand launching of the newly revitalized buri industry in May 2011, coinciding with the celebration of Sariaya’s most popular attraction, the forthcoming “Agawan Festival” in honor of the Spanish Patron Saint of farmers San Isidro Labrador.

For the “Agawan Festival 2011”, the grand Buri launching activities started on the afternoon of May 12th with the arrival of the production crew of ABS CBN’s early morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda”. They facilitated the extravaganza style preparations necessary for the May 13th early coverage by one of its leading hosts Ms. Winnie Cordero, wherein aside from all the fanfare, a display booth was reserved for the Kalahi Multi Purpose Cooperative of Barangay Gibanga and the Sariayanas high - end quality bags and accessories. Taking that into primary consideration and not leaving anything to chance in regard to the need for an even more efficient and faster buri bag production, the four buri bag seamstresses of the Kalahi Multi Purpose Cooperative were sent to Pila, Laguna previously so Mr. Cesar Pasco and Mr. Rinel Batralo can closely supervise them. As such, the high –end buri bags and accessories were given ample exposure and prominence with Ms. Cordero interviewing Ms. Caballes on the details their production. Truly and indeed, it was a grand coming out for the revitalized buri industry of Sariaya which was well received by the locals as well as the visitors alike, judging from the brisk sale and placement of orders at the Sariayanas buri products booth during the Agawan Festival 2011 Agro-Industrial Fair.

With the great media exposure thus received, there was no turning back for the Kalahi Multi – Purpose Cooperative ng Barangay Gibanga, eventually renamed as the “Kalahi Multi – Purpose Cooperative”, and what followed was a spate of trade fair exposures with the assistance of the Quezon Provincial Tourism Office, the provincial office of the Department of Trade and Industry, and even that of Laguna, as well as the Department of Labor and Employment. As such, the cooperative continues to avail of all the trainings and trade fair exposures just as it has been sustained by the conversion of Sariayanas into a corporation which buys all the Kalahi buri products being produced, with Mrs. Caballes serving as the Marketing Director. Moreover, the DTI, the DOLE and the Sariaya LGU are in full support of all their endeavors wherein the DTI provided the machines and the equipments, the DOLE for the financial assistance in the purchase of the materials, and the Sariaya LGU for the continuous trainings and assistance for initial capital not only for Kalahi but also for all the Sariaya women’s groups. Out of the 43 barangay women’s groups in Sariaya, 11 accordingly have already received trainings on buri bag weaving with the others to follow suit.

To further encourage this, the Sariaya LGU provided the starting capital, the buri - cutting equipment such as the “Linasan”, and the raw material for the “Bayong”weaving. They likewise tapped the “Samahan ng mga Magulang na may Anak na may Kapansanan” (SMAK) for it as well. As such, even the men folk who are members of the “Men Opposed to Violence against women and children (MOVE) will assist the Kalahi Multi – Purpose Cooperative in the production of the “Taka” fashioned from corrugated boxes. All of these is in line with the gender issues being raised which are slowly but surely being given due consideration by the Municipal Gender And Development Council (MGADC) of which Mrs. Caballes is actively a full - pledged member. It increasingly addresses the problem of creating jobs for the marginalized sectors of the Sariayahin society.

This good working partnership established in recent years between the Quezon Provincial DTI Office with the “Kalahi Multi – Purpose Cooperative / SARIAYANAS Buri Products since 2010 truly spelled sustainability for the local buri industry hereabouts. The much – needed exposure for further expansion about to be brought by the influx of new prospective partners like the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, which find merit in such community – based and grassroots level - friendly enterprises is indeed forthcoming.

THE EUROPEAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OF THE PHILIPPINES VISITS SARIAYANAS BURI PRODUCTS, AND ADA’S GARDEN SPA, HOTEL AND RESORT ... PART 2

By Eric J. Dedace

Sir Eric, Sir Noli Nicanor and Ma’am Suzette Gamido arrived at about past 12: 30 PM and they were received by the ever hospitable and accommodating Ms. Caballes at her newly renovated reception area. Likewise present were fellow Sariaya Tourism Council Board of Directors member Ms. Ofelia R. Aria and the Sariaya Tourism office documentation artist Mr. Ryanilo A. Racoma. After the necessary introductions and exchange of pleasantries, the talk was diverted to the high grade SARIAYANAS Buri products and as such, Ms. Caballes invited everyone to go to the SARIYANAS products showroom adjacent to the lounging area for a look at samples of the craftsmanship, where the guests admired the beautiful buri products , the styles of which have been patented for Sariaya. Ms. Caballes explained in detail the different essential procedures involved in the production, from the obtaining of the Buri palm leaves from the high trees and their processing into raw materials and substrates for their final weaving and sewing into the high grade SARIAYANAS products that are adaptable to the needs of today’s discriminating, stylish, and fashionable customers.

Thereafter, Ms. Caballes toured them around the nearby Mount Banahaw Red Soil dry sauna facility of the Ada’ Garden, Spa, Hotel and Resort, just steps away from the SARIAYANAS Showroom. She said that taking care of this unique and one-of-a-kind facility is of prime importance since it is an essential and one – of – a – kind part of the wellness establishment, a very distinct feature that provides the kind of service that the Ada’s Garden Spa, Hotel and Resort is known and their most avid clients seek. As such, she invited them to go inside the igloo type structure and experience for themselves the kind of therapeutic properties that it offers.

Ms. Caballes then led her visitors outside towards the area near the overnight lodging accommodation facilities being renovated to accommodate even more clients. The old worn out native style huts of light and indigenous materials that have been in use since the early days of the spa are now giving way to more permanent structures with more upgraded amenities and facilities to cater to the needs of the clients, like providing wifi connections for internet convenience. The serene surroundings, made even more cozy by the cool January weather is very conducive for outdoors conversation. Ms. Caballes and her guests had more animated talk about Sariaya’s renascent Buri industry as facilitated by the DTI Quezon Office, as well as the heritage related tourism attractions of Sariaya, which obviously grabbed the interest of her guests.

Since it was already heading towards the mid afternoon, Ms. Caballes led them back to the newly renovated receiving area where she served a very hearty and delicious snack of “Pinag-ong Sariaya”, “Sinulbot” and coffee, that complimented the very engaging topic of conversation. Ms. Caballes told them that Sariaya’s tourism program is community and local heritage - based, what with the very rich culture that Sariaya has as a result of its three geographical endowments, “Kabundukan, Kapatagan, Karagatan” or ”KKK” which is the promotional scheme of the Sariaya Tourism Council (STC).
It was so opportune that Municipal Mayor Rosauro V. Masilang arrived for a brief meeting with two guests and Ms. Caballes introduced Sir Eric, Sir Noli and Ma’am Suzette to him. They exchanged pleasantries as customary and stated the reason for their visit, which all the more made their chance gathering congenial and worthwhile. Thereafter, STC PRO Eric J. Dedace came and he was promptly introduced as an accommodating and effective resource person, should they return in the near future to avail of a heritage town tour of Sariaya. To his offer of sending through e mail, some of his written articles on Sariaya that incorporate his personal research works care of doing comprehensive interviews with the town’s elderly residents as well as properly cited, already published materials on Sariaya, Sir Noli Nicanor promptly gave him his calling card.

Excusing themselves for the need to depart for another pressing commitment, they thanked Ms. Caballes and the rest of the Sariaya Tourism Council Board for their hospitality and assistance that made their brief Sariaya visit insightful and worthwhile.
