Digital expected to influence half of in-store sales in 2015

Half of in-store retail sales will be influenced by digital technology in 2015, according to a new report by Deloitte.

Digital technology is influencing 33% of in-store retail sales in the UK, equivalent to almost £100 billion in 2014.

Consumer ownership of and engagement with digital technology is growing, and the rate of growth is accelerating. The fact that consumers are leading increasingly digital lives has an impact on how they consume products and services and the way that they interact with retailers and brands.

To assess the changing dynamic between the consumer and retailer, and both the physical and digital worlds, Deloitte conducted a study to find out how consumers currently use digital devices at different stages of the shopping journey.

Key findings
• The influence of digital devices on in-store purchase
behaviour has grown by 175% in two years.

• Digital technology is influencing 33% of in-store retail
sales in the UK, equivalent to almost £100 billion in 2014.

• In particular, mobile is affecting 17% of in-store sales or
£50bn.

• 33% of consumers said they wanted the ability to pay for
goods in a digital format in the future.

• The digital influence factor varies by category: from half of
all purchases of furniture down to one in four purchases of
clothing and footwear.

• Consumers want to use digital devices throughout their
path to purchase: 41% of shoppers thought that engaging
with a digital device made their shopping trip easier.

• Consumers prefer to use their own device for assistance
in-store, rather than ask a sales assistant or check an
unmanned device.

• We expect digital influence to continue to grow to reach
50% of all store retail sales by the end of 2015.

With increased integration across multiple channels, businesses may need to change the methods and metrics they use for evaluating digital influence and performance.

Are scratching for every cent they can find ?

via

Charges proposed to almost in the

are proposing to almost double the cost of in the city centre - with rental fees proposed to go from $170/m2 from $140/m2.

Significantly higher than surrounding areas, including and .

On face value this seems to unfairly city centre .

We support the need to charge for the privilege of using outdoor public space for commercial gain, but are concerned that this does not appear equitable nor support the aspirations of creating a vibrant, business friendly city centre.

We would like to know what your view is about these proposed charges.

The City East West Transport Study
By Matt L, on August 8th, 2014

Anyone keeping track will know there’s a heap of projects planned to happen in the CBD in the coming years, projects like the CRL, the Victoria St Linear Park on Victoria St and City Centre Bus improvements to support the new bus network to name a few. As Cameron Brewer would say – where are the vehicles on Quay St going to go?

It’s a valid question and while some might say “who cares”, it is an issue we have to deal with. Wisely Auckland Transport realised the importance of dealing with the east-west streets in the CBD as whole and that’s where the City East West Transport Study (CEWT) comes in. As the name suggests the study looks at the key east-west roads in the CBD. I first heard about the study some time ago and now have the study thanks to a LGOIMA request. The full report is here (44MB)

Showrooming Is Here to Stay, Here’s How to Deal

I need a new dining room table. I have been working on my MBA from my couch and various spaces of my living room floor for almost 2 years now and I am sick of it. I refuse to let guests use the extra space on the couch as their ad hoc dinner trays, and I have failed at offering any type of alternative. So that means I need to go shopping.

Since furniture shopping isn’t something that I do on a regular basis it requires much time and research, but who has time for that when by the time you’re reading this post I will be back to recording lectures on my iPhone?

I need a new table, now, at the best price and to fit my “décor” but to find that right table that will require a little bit of “showrooming” the dirty word in retail that we have been throwing around for sometime now.

Thing is, without showrooming I would not have the at-hand knowledge of who was selling what table at what price, and sure I am looking to see if I can find that table anywhere else for a lower price than where Google Images originally led me. Once I’ve made my decision the next step is to see whether or not there is a physical location where I can pick up my table or have it delivered in time for at least the second week of class, which may then require me to drive to the store, where I may in fact find chairs to match this table, which is a whole ‘nother diary entry and maybe even a few place mats.

Wouldn’t it be cool if when I got to the store, my phone alerted me of items from the same retailer that complemented my current purchase, as well as any discounts, price matching, or sale items that I might be interested in? Then after all that mobile economic efficiency, they also ship it right to my newly tabled apartment because their inventory shows it in stock and available to ship? Would be nice right?
