Every page read in a book is a chance for your child to learn the following:
Spelling.
Every word your child pronounces in the place of reading is a chance at enhancing his spelling mastery.
Vocabulary.
The accumulation and understanding of words from books is how your child builds vast relevant vocabulary for academic and social interactions.
Understanding the world.
Informative books give insight to learning and knowing about the world. Your child hasn't been to Europe yet can read and be informed about Europe for effective communication through informative books.
Literacy.
Excellent speech and sentence structure necessary for written and spoken english comes from reading. You don't teach literacy from mere words. Fluency in writing and grammer is achieved through reading variety of books. It is from reading books a child learns constructive writing.
The love of reading.
This is the desire of every parent. Yet we wait for encouragement and push to help our children achieve and enhance.
It is one thing for your child to start reading, don't stop at it. Offer variety of books in line with your child's are of interest so your child will have the excitement to read and love reading.

Have you seen a child reading an interesting or informative book, how engrossed, focused and relaxed the child is in that moment.
Have you read a fascinating book to your child, how exciting and engaging it was to your child in that moment.
Those are positive engagements.....books and reading are positive engagement.
