A few hours at Elio Grasso this afternoon, tasting the new 2022 Barolo releases along with the 2020 Riserva Runcot: once again, and based on my tasting until now, 2022 looks like a vintage where the producer’s ability and skill to “read”, understand and interpret the vineyard is more important, and has a bigger impact and influence, than the prestige and status of the vineyard site itself. Having a “grand cru” vineyard in 2022 doesn’t lead automatically to a top wine like it might be more the case in normal and classic vintage. To give you an idea of what I am saying, in 2022, not surprisingly, several producers discarded grapes coming from the top of hills, which historically have considered the parts for Nebbiolo.
That said, 2022 Barolos from Elio Grasso show the meticulous work and the amazing attention to details that Gianluca and his staff put in the vineyard with some tasks that might seem crazy or nonsense. And the result is that the 2 Barolos clearly show the differences that you expect from Gavarini Chiniera and Casa Matè as well as a freshness and complexity that can’t be taken for granted in this vintage. And 2020 Riserva Runcot, aged in 100% new French oak, is a masterpiece in the perfect use of oak, which doesn’t mark the wine at all. ❤️🍇🍷🇮🇹🔝💥🚀💣
