Dams & Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in Manipur by Jiten Yumnam draws on three decades of activism, field research, and documentation to examine the impacts of mega dam projects in Manipur. The book highlights the contradiction between the poor performance of existing dams and the continued push for new projects under the Manipur Hydroelectric Power Policy, 2012. It raises critical questions about who truly benefits from these projects and why indigenous communities are expected to sacrifice their land, livelihoods, and ecological resources for developments that have often failed to meet their stated objectives.

In his foreword, Laifungbam Debabrata Roy argues that the struggle over rivers is fundamentally an ethical and political question. He reflects on the relationship between the state and indigenous peoples, questioning the legitimacy of a state that neglects the rights, welfare, and aspirations of the communities most affected by large-scale development projects.

The rise of the extractive economy in Northeast India transformed the region in far-reaching ways. The expansion of oil drilling, tea estates, and mining operations reshaped landscapes, altered local economies, and redefined social and political life. Across Assam and Nagaland, communities continue to live with the consequences of these developments, confronting militarization, displacement, ecological change, and persistent struggles over land and resources.

Drawing on rich ethnographic research, anthropologist Dolly Kikon explores the complexities of Northeast India—a region situated between Southeast Asia and China, where borders are constantly created, contested, and maintained. Through the lens of oil and coal extraction, she examines the social relationships, aspirations, and tensions that emerge around land, resources, and belonging. Living with Oil and Coal offers a powerful reflection on citizenship, social justice, and environmental politics, highlighting issues that resonate far beyond Northeast India.

Verrier Elwin’s Nagaland (1961) is regarded as one of the foundational ethnographic and historical studies on the Naga peoples of Northeast India. Published from Shillong during the early postcolonial period, the book provides a detailed account of the social life, customs, village institutions, political traditions, festivals, material culture, and changing identity of different Naga tribes.

Elwin approached the Nagas not merely as “tribal subjects” but as communities possessing rich cultural systems and distinct worldviews. The work discusses important aspects such as morungs, feasts of merit, kinship, customary law, oral traditions, warrior culture, and the transformations brought by colonial administration, Christianity, and modern state formation.

The Lai Haraoba festival serves as a vital key to understanding the religion, culture, and oral history of the Meitei people of Manipur. Rich and complex in nature, it embraces oral literature, music, dance, rituals, and ceremonial practices that embody a distinctive pre-Hindu worldview preserved for centuries. Through its artistic and spiritual depth, Lai Haraoba reflects the essence of Meitei cultural identity.

First published in 1997, this book was the first comprehensive English study on Lai Haraoba. It explores the festival within the wider framework of Meitei culture and traditions. The opening section examines the Meitei religious worldview alongside detailed studies of oral literature, music, and dance. The central section presents translations of oral texts with explanatory notes and descriptions of the rituals, while the final section offers interpretations of the festival’s deeper meanings.

Using a poly-methodological approach, the authors provide a valuable work not only for students of religion and social anthropology but also for scholars of oral literature, dance, and ethnomusicology.
