Happy New Year! I’ve been quiet on here but busy elsewhere! I completed this little pair in December. In the Woods 1 and 2 were inspired by dog walks in nearby fields next to the River Bollin. Not a colour palette I usually use but I really surprised myself by enjoying working with different yellows. Acrylic paint/ink and oil pastels on canvas panel, in a St Ives frame, 34x34cm. Only one available and to be added to my website soon.

Both pieces were inspired by a summer holiday spent in the East Neuk of Fife in Scotland with its ever-changing and expansive skies.

I wasn’t expecting to actually produce any artwork at the end of the contemporary landscape course but this seemed to come together at the last minute. So different to what I would normally paint, but so freeing to try something new! Thank you for your fabulous teaching.

Just spent the most fabulous weekend at taking part in Rachel Cronin’s contemporary landscape course. Lovely people (and animals!), inspirational surroundings, informative teaching and all-in-all, a wonderful art retreat. Thank you and Andy for your hospitality and for providing such a unique art experience.

I love these St Ives frames - they really make a painting come alive! Thank you Alan for making these!

This painting, ‘Summer Sands’, was bought by a customer for their mum’s Christmas. Hopefully bringing them some warmth on these cold winter days!

Day 8 of the art challenge set by

INSPIRATION

This is an easy one. The sea and the coast!

Although I now live south of Manchester, I was born and raised in Scotland, so I’m lucky enough to go there fairly frequently to stay with family. I have close family on both the west and east coast. Two very different types of coastline but both beautiful in their own right. I love painting the big skies of the east coast in Fife and I have taken what seems like a million photographs of different sky-scapes. Not to mention the collection of photos which my lovely sister-in-law sends of the West Sands beach in St Andrews!

I also spend time on the island of Angelsey in Wales. The beaches and seas are so inspiring, and a photograph taken of the same view on one day can look so very different on another, depending on the weather (which is ever-changing!). The sea colour in particular looks different all the time … from muted greys to varying shades of greens and blues.

Late posting of day 7 of the art challenge set by

COLOUR PALETTE

In most of my work, I try to keep a fairly limited palette as the painting can look too cluttered otherwise. As I often paint seascapes, I use a lot of blues and greens … My favourite blue is Prussian blue - it’s so versatile. I often paint with it straight out of the tube where you get that beautiful deep colour. Or mixed with varying amounts of white to create much lighter, softer tones …

A busy weekend, so here are the catch-up posts of the art challenge set by

Day 6:

CURRENT CHALLENGE

There always seem to be challenges, but at the moment, it’s about balancing my time between working on commissions, and with painting what I choose to paint. Of course it’s great having commissions, but there is a brief to follow (a challenge within a challenge!), so you can kind of lose that sense of freedom, and in turn, it can become difficult not to let your creativity be inhibited.

So my plan is to spend some time on both. Which is easier said than done when you’re me as I tend to finish one painting first before starting a new one. Perhaps mixing it up a bit will be good for me. It is a challenge, after all!

I did this painting a couple of months ago and am now happy that it’s finished. So now it’s time to get the varnish out …

Day 5 of the art challenge set by

FAVOURITE TOOL

Like most artists, I use brushes and palette knives etc, but the thing I most love is to use my fingers. I especially like using them when working on either smooth paper or smooth wooden boards - the paint just glides around so well. There’s a feeling of both freedom and control. Is that possible? I think so!

I was asked by a group of ladies to create a painting of Loch Lomond as a wedding present for their friend’s daughter. I’m lucky enough to have parents that have lived right by the loch for nearly 30 years, and so I have oodles of inspiration. ‘Over the Loch’ was completed in the summer. So lovely to get this note, too, from the ‘Helensburgh ladies’ …
