Welcome to Ridgeback Forge and crafts where we create unique items from UK produced metal and locally sourced wood. We are located in the idyllic south west Scotland where we can make noise without disturbing the neighbours. After a full career as a communications engineer in the UK armed forces, I developed skills that I could take forward and use to develop my hobby into a business. After watchi

ng too many episodes of 'Forged in Fire' on the History channel, I wanted to try my hand at blade-smithing and I was awful at it. But that brief exposure had ignited a passion, and I have been forging knives daily since. That was in 2016, and now, hundreds of knives later, I want to share my passion for forging knives with you. When you use an exceptional knife, chopping and preparing items is no longer a chore. Whether you're creating a fantastic meal for your loved ones or if you're surviving 'off-grid', let me produce you a knife that will exceed your expectations. We are looking to create unique items that will last a lifetime. A well made, hand forged knife can last multiple generations and will appeal to people like me who want to change this throw away culture that permeates society.

Busy busy time coming up for the forge when we officially kick off show season next weekend. I just wanted to highlight some the amazing events we'll be attending if you wanted to come and have a look at the knives or just wanted to chat all things knives and knife making!!

9/10 May - Great British Food festival at Arley Hall and gardens.
23/24/25 May - Springfling, a D&G wide arts festival where you can visit artists and maker in their work space.
30 May - Edgy Expo, Scotland's first knife show held at the Perth race course
30/31 May - Countryfest at the Westmorland show ground. Lady Ridgeback will run day 1 and I'll then join her for day 2.
6/7 June - Northern Country Sports show at the Harrogate event centre.
18,19,20,21 June - BBC Good Food festival and Gardner's world at the NEC.
3, 4, 5 July - Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace.
10/11 July - Gosford House artistic craft fair at Gosford house in Tranent.
18/19 July - Great Eccleston Show, Great Eccleston near Preston.

I think that lot should keep me (Exceptionally) busy for the foreseeable, especially with with all the experience days we'll be running as well😁😁

Fresh from the workbench today, a lovely trio of hunter/camp knives. This is a genuine attempt to try and make a selection of knives that are as close to identical as I can make them, which is doubly difficult because everything here is done by hand and by eye!!

We'll get the sheathes knocked out next!!

Sent this little beauty out to it's forever home recently.

This is a 5" gralloching knife made from Magnacut and with a stabilised Turkish walnut handle to complete the classic look.

We've paired this with a robust olive kydex sheath so you can always make sure to bring the knife back with you after a day out😁

Small knives might be good for heavy veg, but lets be honest, you can't beat a decent sized Nakiri!!

This work in progress absolutely decimated this veg with Lady Ridgeback getting in on the action slicing the tomato and the carrot for good measure.

We'll get this finished in the next few days with engraving and what not😁

Just finished a great weekend in the forge with Rory, Peter, Ross and Billy where they spent Saturday forging out the knife Rory will use to cut his wedding cake with in a couple of months and then today where they hand forged bespoke Sgian Dubhs and finished them off with totally custom handles made from whisky barrel staves.

Just putting a lovely trio of brand new knives through their paces.

Normally, for heavy duty veg like sweet potato and swede, you'd need a big knife. Not so this trio, with 2 of them having 5" blades while the smallest has a 3" blade and they have properly destroyed the veg😁😁

We'll get these finished up over the weekend and then they'll be ready for sale😁🔪🔪🔪

I was getting a little tired of videoing myself very thinly slicing a tomato, so I wanted to try something a little different.

Here we have a piece of newspaper, simply folded so that it will free stand and then sliced beautifully not just once, but twice😁

This was a fun test; let me know in the comments if there's anything else I should try slicing to test the knives.

I love the transition that happens from a simple acid etch!

The picture of the left is the Damasteel knives all hand sanded and polished to a shiny 1200gr and then dipped in a mild acid solution for 3 x 6 minutes, which is the picture on the right.

I think the results very much speak for themselves😁😁
