The conversation around struggling businesses often focuses on a lack of customers. But for many businesses, that's not the reality.

The real challenge is the relentless rise in costs. Food and ingredients, energy, wages, business rates, rent & insurance have all increased significantly, while hospitality businesses continue to face a 20% VAT rate.

Many European countries recognise the value that hospitality brings to their economies, communities and tourism sectors and apply reduced VAT rates to restaurants, cafés and hospitality businesses. Countries such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy all benefit from lower hospitality VAT rates than the UK.

What's often overlooked is that many of the products businesses buy in are zero rated for VAT, meaning there is little or no VAT to reclaim on many core purchases. Yet hospitality businesses must still charge 20% VAT on sales, creating an additional burden on both businesses and rising costs for customers.

Many businesses are busy. Many are doing everything right. Yet they're finding it increasingly difficult to maintain healthy margins, invest in growth and plan for the future, leading to closures everyday.

Independent businesses create jobs, support local economies, attract visitors and bring life to our high streets. They deserve an environment where success is encouraged, not penalised.

That's why we're supporting the campaign and the call for a reduction in VAT to help businesses thrive, invest and continue serving their communities.

We've been chatting to customers recently and were surprised by how many people tell us they didn't realise we were here or had no idea what we actually do!

We're a family run chocolate factory, chocolate workshops space, full café and factory shop where we make our own Belgian chocolates, serve great coffee, cakes, lunches, ice cream, waffle sticks and plenty of chocolatey treats. 🍫☕🍰
