[ ON VIEW ] presents an exhibition by Philippe Parreno across both Rue Dragon sites, for the launch of a new edition of the Cahiers d’Art R***e made in collaboration with the artist. It explores the nature of Parreno’s process, its raison d’être, and its motives, with Parreno revisiting 30 years of exhibition practice through an assemblage of rarely-seen images. In the gallery space, a Marquee (2021) that is programmed with various algorithms based on the unfinished 1953 novel ‘Mount Analogue’ by French author René Doumal displays a chromatic choreography. And in the Editions space, new editions of Parreno’s work ‘Iceman in Reality Park’ were produced for the opening, but might have melted by now🧊.

The house’s graphic new collection is designed around the theme of love and its vibrational potential 💗, and is made sustainably by a team of tailors and artisans in Grand-Bassam. [ ON VIEW ] A major new retrospective ‘Ghost & Spirit’ of the work of Mike Kelley is currently showing at , providing a fresh look at the work of one of America’s most influential artists of the late twentieth-early twenty-first centuries. From the late 1970s to 2012, Kelley made a diverse body of work using drawing, collage, performance, found objects, and video. It is the first major retrospective since his death and features his breakthrough 'craft' sculptures made from textile and soft toys, through to his multi-media installations such as ‘Day Is Done’, as well as the ‘minor histories’ of Kelley’s practice, as he called them: drawings, photographs, and preparatory writings that shed light on his thought process. Also on show at the Fondation Pinault, and not to be missed, is the exhibition ‘Strike’ devoted to the radical artist Lee Lozano who explored the blurry boundaries between art and life.

[ REBIRTH ] The mythic and much-loved Montmartre bistro .montmartre has just reopened, saved from probable destruction by Clémentine and Antoine, the inspired founders of local creative agency . Open since 1921, the place’s special spirit and history was the work of Elyette Ségard, who ran it for half a century before retiring in 2009. They say Simenon wrote his first novel there, and that Céline, Cendrars, Marcel Aymé and Patrick Modiano were regulars. Maybe Jacques Brel, seated in a corner near the window, even penned ‘Ne Me Quittez Pas’ here… If today Au Rêve has been updated in all the right places – it’s now open from 8am to 2am, and has brand-new toilets 😄 – you’ll continue to find Mathieu Renucci behind the bar, a great list of wines by the glass, and simple but good French café classics on the menu, as it continues life as one of Montmartre’s best local haunts.

[ TWIN SHOWS ] Currently on show at ALAÏA, COUTURIER COLLECTIONNEUR: “For many years, I have been buying or receiving as gifts dresses, coats and jackets that bear witness to the great history of fashion. To preserve them has become for me an attitude of deference to our craft, a mark of solidarity towards those who, before me, knew the pleasures and the demands of the pair of scissors. It’s a tribute on my part to all the crafts and ideas that these garment manifest.” Azzedine Alaïa is back in the spotlight at the Palais Galliera, a decade after the retrospective devoted to him for the museum’s inauguration, with this exhibition showcasing his remarkable couture collection, which he began in 1968 with pieces he acquired after Balenciaga closed his house. 140 garments from masters including Chanel, Charles James, Christian Dior, Madame Grès, Jeanne Lanvin, Jean Patou, Paul Poiret, Elsa Schiaparelli, Madeleine Vionnet or Charles Frederick Worth provide a masterclass in the art of couture. The exhibition continues across the street, in the Matisse room of the with the presentation of three further pieces from Alaïa’s collection, costumes designed by Matisse for the Ballet Russes, using his cut-out technique to masterful effect. And finally, is presenting in parallel the exhibition ALAÏA/ GRÈS creating a dialogue between the two geniuses, united by their formal principles, their cutting techniques, and the harmonious combinations of fabric and colours they embraced.

[ NEW IN PARIS ] unveiled its giant new Paris flagship earlier this month, during last Paris Fashion Week. The still independent house exits the shadows of the confidential courtyard where it’s been hiding since 2000 to take its place in the sun, practically an entire building, next door, at 56 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré (ex Burberry). A wall of red is glimpsed through the doors and windows from the street, and once inside the labyrinthine space feels like some kind of fashion-forward escape game, plunging you into a separate universe of raw concrete floors, white walls and red lacquered accents, cut off from all glimpses of the outside world. A giant terrace will hopefully welcome a café soon. And the good news continues, with the brand preparing to inaugurate Dover Street Market Paris in early 2024 within the incredible Marais hôtel particulier they were operating as radical culture hub from 2021.

To coincide with the inauguration of its multifaceted project space in Zurich, MAISON SHIFT hosts its first ‘Fashion Futures’ Market & Think-Tank during in the heart of the Haut Marais. In partnership with .family and the On Tour, MAISON SHIFT is inviting selected independent Swiss brands from the fashion / textile / jewellery / accessories sectors to sell and discuss their work in a dynamic setting during a three-day event. Fashion activist Maroussia Rebecq / ANDREA CREWS ( ) lends a ‘Grosse Pouffe’, upcycled parkas become a sculpture for living.

[ NOW OPEN ] Alaïa / Grès. Au-delà de la Mode at the . Alaïa was an avid collector in the fields of fashion, art, design and photography. For its just-opened exhibition, curated by , the Foundation presents a selection of its extensive collection in parallel with Alaïa’s own work : day and evening dresses that draw connections between both couturiers’ formal approach and their research into cut and design, and associations between fabrics and colours. And this rich seam will be mined further with the opening later this month, at the , of the exhibition ‘Azzedine Alaïa, Couturier Collectionneur’ where 140 of Alaia’s most exceptional pieces from his 20,000 piece collection will be presented, from the birth of haute couture at the end of the 19th century to pieces by his contemporaries. His collection was never shown during his lifetime, in France or abroad.

[ EXHIBITION ] A show LA RENTRÉE of recent works in pastel by Paris-based artist opens next Friday 15 Sep, 6-8pm, at the Mkrs. Paris Shop. will perform.
“My series of Bathers celebrates female form, using colour to express the emotions. I’m still a romantic, albeit an utopian one. Produced over a period of around six weeks during the latter stages of lockdown in the autumn of 2021, the series wound up being about my own isolation, and voyeurism, and how we’ve wound down collectively during this weird period. I’ll never be able to recreate or pull off a series like this again. Colour is my obsession, and it was a strange experimental way of working. I use colours to point to and express ideas and feelings that aren’t easily accessible to me with words, and found that pastels on paper were the right media for me at the right time.”

[NEW IN PARIS] Nicolas Gabard has opened a new boutique in Saint-Germain. Currently in soft opening mode, its focus is on the house’s prêt-à-porter collections and with a more casual « weekend » vibe than the Rue de Richelieu space, where the focus is on the house’s exceptional tailoring services. Here you’ll find jeans, their perfect chelsea boot, and a range of knits, shirts, jackets and accessories. The sharp space was designed by Fred Peneau - better known as the restaurateur behind Le Châteaubriand and now Grillé - to fuse with the Ledt Bank vibes.

🍷 Chef and Isobel are running this wonderful wine bar , it’s an extension to the natural wine bar next door at the bottom of Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud. They serve a delicious selection of simple plates, perhaps chicken stew, anchovies, eggs & mayo or lard on toast to go with the wines- and the clientele is as congenial and cosmopolitan as the menu. Another plus is that you can grab a bottle next door and drink it here with a modest 10€ added corkage fee. The lights are low and the atmosphere friendly, and they’re open Mondays 👍🏼 It’s our new fave.
