Then why is it such a common practice to say that “Swiss chocolate is the best in the world”? What exactly defines Swiss chocolate?
Cacao doesn’t grow in Switzerland, so it’s up to the chocolate company to choose either fine flavor or cheap bulk cacao. Switzerland might have invented milk chocolate and the conching machine back in the 1850s, but both are far from being exclusive to Switzerland in 2021. There is also no specific process to make Swiss chocolate and label it as such. Swiss chocolate is simply chocolate made in Switzerland, and that’s the extent of its meaning. Let me show you two 100% cacao Swiss chocolate bars produced just miles away, but that couldn’t be more distant:

Lindt: *unknown* (so much transparency for a product of EXCELLENCE)
Taucherli: ABOCFA cooperative in Ghana. On the bar there is a QR code that brings you directly to the company’s website where you can read all the details.

Lindt: cocoa mass, cocoa butter, cocoa powder.
Taucherli: cocoa mass, cocoa butter.
👅 Taste
Lindt: intense smokiness that reminds of burnt rubber and a persistent bitterness with a chalky texture.
Taucherli: fruity taste of coconut with no bitterness and a velvety texture with a sweet vanilla aftertaste.
🎁 Packaging
Lindt: empty marketing words like “quality guarantee”, “finest cacao”, “best ingredients”, “our artisans” with no info provided to back up all these claims.
Taucherli: specific info on the roasting time, conching time, cocoa origin, harvest year and a QR code for more info, plus daily behind-the-scenes photos and videos on their Social Media accounts.
Do you see how useless it is to talk about “Swiss chocolate”?
