Attributed to Gustav Stickley’s designer and architect, Harvey Ellis, this desk is a departure from the more substantial pieces that Stickley created just a few years prior. Although the furniture still stresses horizontal planes, the overall scale is lighter, and the shoe foot visually grounds the piece.
However, what is most appreciated today is the delicate inlay of linear and floral design, which highlights the surface, and provides contrast against the dark quartersawn oak.
This piece and others by Harvey Ellis are currently on view at The Stickley Museum.
