Cullinan Diamond Cutting Transformation How the largest gem-quality diamond ever discovered (3,106 carats rough, found in South Africa in 1905) was cut into major polished stones.

In 1908, the rough stone was expertly cut in Amsterdam by the Asscher Brothers. It was divided into nine principal diamonds, many of which now form part of the British Crown Jewels and Royal Collection:

Cullinan I ("Great Star of Africa") – 530.2 carats, set in the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross.

Cullinan II ("Second Star of Africa") – 317.4 carats, set in the Imperial State Crown.

Cullinan III – 94.4 carats, a pear-shaped stone, sometimes worn as a pendant with Cullinan IV.

Cullinan IV – 63.6 carats, cushion-cut.

Cullinan V – 18.8 carats, heart-shaped.

Cullinan VI – 11.5 carats, marquise-cut.

Cullinan VII – 8.8 carats, marquise-cut.

Cullinan VIII – 6.8 carats, cushion-cut.

Cullinan IX – 4.4 carats, pear-shaped.

Together, these stones are among the most famous diamonds in the world, treasured as part of Britain’s Royal regalia.
