Background and Aims

High Protein diets may be associated with endocrine responses that favor improved metabolic outcomes. We studied the response to High Protein (HP) versus High Carbohydrate (HC) Diets in terms of incretin hormones GLP-1 and GIP, the hunger hormone ghrelin and BNP, which is associated with cardiac function. We hypothesized that HP diets induce more pronounced release of glucose lowering hormones, suppress hunger and improve cardiac function.

Conclusions

This study demonstrates that the HP(High Protein)diet increases GLP-1 and GIP which may be responsible in part for improved insulin sensitivity and β cell function compared to the HC diet. HP ghrelin results demonstrate the HP diet can reduce hunger more effectively than the HC diet. BNP and other CVRF, metabolic parameters and oxidative stress are significantly improved compared to the HC(High Carbohydrates)diet.

“The Big Three Health Behaviors and Mental Health and Well-Being Among Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Investigation of Sleep, Exercise, and Diet”

Background: Sleep, physical activity, and diet have been associated with mental health and well-being individually in young adults. However, which of these “big three” health behaviors most strongly predicts mental health and well-being, and their higher-order relationships in predictive models, is less known. This study investigated the differential and higher-order associations between sleep, physical activity, and dietary factors as predictors of mental health and well-being in young adults.

Results: Controlling for covariates, sleep quality was the strongest predictor of depressive symptoms and well-being, followed by sleep quantity and physical activity. Only one dietary factor—raw fruit and vegetable consumption—predicted greater well-being but not depressive symptoms when controlling for covariates. There were some higher-order interactions among health behaviors in predicting the outcomes, but these did not survive cross-validation.

Conclusion: SLEEP QUALITY is an IMPORTANT PREDICTOR of MENTAL HEALTH and WELL BEING in YOUNG ADULTS, whereas physical activity and diet are secondary but still significant factors. Although strictly correlational, these patterns suggest that future interventions could prioritize sleep quality to maximize mental health and well-being in young adults.

Michael Jordan was cut from his high school varsity team as a sophomore.

Scotty Pippen was a student manager at a small NAIA college.

Dennis Rodman was homeless at age 19.



Jordan was a 5'10" 15-year-old sophomore and grew 5 inches over the next year.

Pippen entered the University of Central Arkansas at 6’1” and grew 7 inches.

Rodman reportedly stood 5'9 at age 19 and experienced a 10-inch growth spurt!

These examples from the 3 main characters in ESPN’s The Last Dance provide a great opportunity to discuss human growth and maturation – as there are many misunderstandings about this topic.

DEFINITIONS OF GROWTH AND MATURATION

First thing first - definitions. Growth and maturation are often used synonymously. Although they are certainly related, they are separate constructs.

Growth is defined as an increase in the size of the body or its parts. This is most often expressed as height but it could be leg length, arm circumference, muscle mass or even heart size.

Maturation (and speaking biologically, not behaviorally as in an 8th grade girl saying to a boy “you are soooo… immature”) is progress towards the biologically mature adult state that varies in timing (maturity status at given time; when certain key events occur) and tempo (maturity progress). It relates biological time to calendar time or biological age to chronological age. This is assessed from either body dimensions or height (to be discussed below), and also more invasive clinical-type assessments such as bone age via a hand-wrist x-ray and secondary sex characteristics via assessment of what are referred to as Tanner stages of pubertal development.

I would like to take the time to provide my recent experience with Rocky at FNM Supplements! During the previous school year (Mid November) I suffered an injury and fractured my humerus.
