The has released their new training document, ‘Primary ear and hearing care training manual’ for . 👂💖

As Nelson Mandela wisely stated, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

With this document, the World Health Organization aims to achieve these objectives 👇

1. Draw the attention of decision-makers in governments and civil society groups towards the WHO’s recommendations regarding the integration of ear and hearing care into primary health care.
2. Encourage governments to integrate primary ear and hearing care into training programmes for health care providers at primary level.
3. Call the attention of primary-level health care providers (health workers and physicians) towards the needs of people with hearing loss and ear disease.
4. Inform people about the importance of ear and hearing care and encourage them to seek services.

Officer Carl Prochilo from the Collingwood Fire Department is spreading awareness about smoke alarms for the hard of hearing. 🚒

Smoke alarms save lives, but for those with hearing loss, an audible alarm may not be the life-saving tool it is intended to be. 👂

Officer Prochilo offers this advice for those with hearing loss:

“The combination of the vibrating and strobe light smoke alarms brings the most effective warning to hearing-impaired individuals. If one device does not rouse them, the other will. Homeowners who are hearing impaired or those with loved ones who are can feel safe and protected knowing the appropriate devices are in place to keep them safe.” 👂💖

You only have one set of ears in your lifetime and one chance to protect and . 👂💖

Here are some simple but important steps you can take to and practice safe listening today:

1. Lower the volume - Keep the volume at safe listening levels on headphones and speakers. 🔊

your hearing health is a crucial factor in your ability to safely “age in place?”

If you are unfamiliar with the term, aging in place means having access to services and the health and social supports needed to live safely and independently in your home and/or community for as long as you are willing and able. 💖

Untreated hearing loss can impact your ability to safely “age in place” by raising safety concerns and leading to unhealthy social withdrawal. ⚠

If aging in place is a priority for you and your loved ones, it’s time to put your hearing health first to ensure it is a safe and available option to you. 👂💖

Do you associate the use of hearing aids with negative stigmas, particularly those surrounding ageism? 👀

If the avoidance of treating your hearing loss stems in any way from the thought that wearing hearing aids will make you ‘look older,’ we want to challenge this view.

Which do you think would ‘age’ someone more? 🤔

A. Nearly invisible hearing aids that enable them to connect with the world around them and remain socially active

B. Withdrawing from social situations, constantly asking someone to repeat themselves, and answering questions inappropriately due to untreated hearing loss.

If you agree, the answer is B; we are here to help. 🦻💖

Happy ! 🏈

Have you ever wondered about the history of the huddle?

It may be surprising to learn its origins are linked to the hard-of-hearing community. 🦻

It is Paul D. Hubbard, a quarterback for Gallaudet University, a private university for the deaf and hard of hearing in Washington, D.C., who is credited with its creation in the 1890s.

As the Gallaudet football team communicated their plays through ASL (American Sign Language) and played against other deaf and hard-of-hearing schools, it was thought their opponents were watching for their play calls.

Hubbard called his team to huddle around him to essentially shield his signs from their opponents, thus leading to the creation of the now widely used huddle. 🙌

On , we want to continue to spread awareness of the importance of hearing assessments as a component of cancer survivorship care following chemotherapy. 👂💖

A study published in BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care on cancer survivors who had been treated with platinum- and/or taxane-based chemotherapy showed the following results:

Among 273 survivors of breast, gastrointestinal, gynecological, or lung cancer, the rate of audiogram-confirmed hearing loss ranged from 52.3% to 71.4%. The rate of tinnitus among survivors ranged from 37.1% to 40.0%.

When discussing these results, Christine Miaskowski, Ph.D., RN, said, “The good news is that the type of hearing loss these patients experience is amenable to a hearing aid. If we can get people tested, and they demonstrate this kind of hearing loss, we can improve their quality of life.”

We couldn’t agree more. If you or a loved one is experiencing signs of hearing loss, don’t delay treatment.

Research being conducted on birds and their unique ability to regrow damaged or dying hair cells within the ear could lead to a cure for hearing loss in humans. 🐦

Scientists are looking to understand the process by which these individual cells regenerate into functioning hair cells within the ear. 👂💖

“The goal is to follow the trail of these regenerating [hair] cells in birds; then we have to figure out why this trail is not working in mammals. What are the missing parts? Maybe we will discover one critical trigger and we can cleverly fix this trigger in mammals.” - Stefan Heller, Ph.D., professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

“Hearing aids can eliminate or worsen what hearing you have left.”

This is a recent statement we came across, and we were disheartened to realize this incorrect information is a common belief. ⚠

Hearing aids not only do not cause further hearing loss, but they can preserve what you have left, prevent hearing loss degradation, and provide auditory benefits to the brain. 🙌

“Hearing aids can provide stimulation of auditory brain pathways that have not been receiving appropriate sound stimulation, reducing the impact on brain processing of sounds and, in some cases, potentially allowing brain pathways associated with sound processing to be re-established,” Angela Shoup, PhD, President of the American Academy of Audiology.

If you have questions or concerns regarding hearing aids and your health, our hearing health professionals would love to address these with you. 🦻💖
