“Mommy Mayhem” paintings, Oil and Acrylic on Paper, 22” x 30”. Painted from 2022 to 2024 and shown as exhibited in Montreal, Quebec at Art Mur Gallery. Thank you for exhibiting my paintings for the first time in Montreal!

About this series (in English and French):

Motherhood is mayhem. Since becoming a mother, I carve out space and time for short creation bursts. I observe my children’s lack of inhibitions and carefree use of materials and incorporate their habits into my work. In my recently completed Master of Fine Arts thesis, I argued that artistic play is critical for an artist mother.

Delighted to have my paintings included in the art exhibition, SUMMER GAZE, with Boom Contemporary Gallery now to August 31st on Artsy. Several of my "After the Plague Party" paintings are included in this art show, including "After the Plague Party in Technicolour" (2023), Oil on canvas, 48" × 150" (121.9 × 381 cm).

In contrast to the delicate and sinuous mark-making that characterized the Spring show, SUMMER GAZE is full of hot color and boldness.

Following on from the GLIMPSES OF SPRING exhibition in April, this gallery-wide presentation includes drawings, paintings and prints. SUMMER GAZE is open from Aug. 1st to 31st on Artsy.

Thanks to the New York Studio School, Elisa Jensen and painter friends from around the world for an incredible painting marathon experience! It was amazing to paint with and learn from artists from Australia, California, New York, Columbia, Israel, and France. I was the only Canadian artist in the group.

Posted • More from my recent virtual intensive summer class Why Paint the Figure. Such a great group of artists from all over the world, who all had such an inventive and personal approach to the 4 poses that we worked with from our two models, really impressed!

"Motherhood Hit Me Like a Train, Cross-Country #3" (2021-22), Watercolour on Paper, 36" x 36." This painting is the third large artwork in my art series. I painted it by dipping a small Thomas the Train toy into watercolour paint and rolling it across paper laid out on the floor.
The paper surface is densely covered with lines built up on the paper over multiple painting sessions.

My Story

Color is the uniting factor in my artwork. Painting and drawing are my main focus but I also incorporate mixed media collage and photography into my studio practice. Trained to work from life as an observational painter, my artwork combines painting from life with abstract marks of color. Current series include collage mixed media paintings, abstracted interiors, wild flower paintings and meditative abstract color studies. I have often worked from life as an observational painter trying to capture temporary moments and feelings into the permanence of paint on canvas.

Whether it’s my children’s toys, female friends, travel photographs or Toronto gardens and flowers, color combinations inspire and excite me. I love exploring and observing color in the world around me then trying to capture what I see in painting or drawing.

I'm a Toronto artist, mom of three and recovered lawyer who has studied and worked in the US, France, Italy and Hong Kong. For as long as I can remember, I’ve created, studied, and obsessed about making art. In 2008, I left practicing law to study painting full-time in New York City. My artwork has been shown in solo and group shows in Washington, DC, New York City, Venice, Italy, and the Toronto area. Read more on my Art Website: https://rachaelgrad.com/pages/my-story
