After a long hiatus, Ludisia (Jewel Orchids) are back in stock! These easy-to-grow orchids like care similar to African violets: medium light, no direct sun, and consistent moisture. They are terrestrial orchids from forest floor habitats. A good quality compost mixed with potting mix is a good growing medium for Ludisia.

Begonia venosa: This uncommon plant is a light-loving, thick-stemmed begonia that doesn’t need a lot of water. Begonia venosa doesn’t usually branch naturally but will grow to 3-5ft tall given enough space, light, and soil. New plants grow from the base of the plant, and pinching may encourage side shoots.

Grow in bright light with some morning or evening sun. The afternoon sun may be too hot. Water when the top couple inches of growing media is dry. Fertilize with a half-strength balanced fertilizer to boost strong stem growth and plan for planting either in a heavy pot and/or placing in a spot where the plant will get support as it grows.

Dieffenbachia is a low-maintenance house or garden plant that grows in shady conditions. It’s great for a first-time plant parent because of its striking foliage and tolerance for neglect. Dieffenbachia prefers to be watered when the top few inches of potting media are dry and to be kept in a spot with bright indirect light, though it will live in low light conditions. It is also stunning planted en masse in a shady garden bed.

Dieffenbachia is a rewarding plant and can be easily propagated via stem cuttings and division. Great for growing gifts for friends! Be patient, though- it can take a couple of months for growth to occur.

Warning! If you have plant-hungry pets or children that put any and everything into their mouths, this is not the plant for you; dieffenbachia plants’ sap is toxic when ingested and can cause mild skin irritation.

Slow-release fertilizers are great for the gardener or houseplant parent that doesn’t want to bother with mixing up fertilizer every week. One application of slow-release fertilizers usually lasts for 3-6 months (depending on the brand). Osmocote Classic 14-14-14 is one of the most popular slow-release fertilizer brands and will last for 3-4 months. A little bit (no more than a teaspoon; two if potting into a 9in pot or larger) can be mixed into the potting mix when repotting or you can topdress your plants with a pinch of the granules once every 3 months.

In the tropics, (more or less) frequent rains and lack of a winter season (read: a rest period) means that the soil in our garden beds gets depleted quickly. Therefore, regularly adding soil amendments to your garden is definitely something to make a part of your yearly regimen. Compost is one of the best things to add to your soil as it adds nutrients, benefits the soil structure (making it less compact), and encourages healthy soil microorganisms. All of which leads to stronger, more vibrant plants!

String of hearts, string of pearls, string of tears...there are so many strings in the houseplant family! Senecio radicans, aka String of Fish Hooks (or Bananas), is another popular “string” that is said to be easier to take care of than String of Pearls. This succulent is native to Southern African countries and is normally trailing along in sandy, rocky soils.

It prefers to be watered only when it’s completely dry, so most find it easier to soak it in a bowl of water, then let completely dry before soaking again. String of Fish Hooks can take indirect or morning or late evening sun and it prefers for all its branches to be spread out so as to let the light reach all parts of the plant.

Prune this guy regularly to get rid of lanky growth and propagate the cuttings! You can use them to bush up your existing plant or give some away to friends.

If you have curious pets or children, take care! Like all Senecios, this one will cause bad stomachaches if eaten.

Soft Tree Fern, Dicksonia antarctica, is an Australian wet forest native that loves high humidity, lots of water (though not on their crown), and bright filtered sunlight. Their long striking fronds provide visual interest indoors, and as the fern grows and forms a trunk, it will be a wonderful conversation piece. They are also good shade garden plants and can be underplanted with maidenhair or other soft ferns. Orchids and small bromeliads can be attached to the trunk. Fertilize regularly with compost, these guys are heavy feeders.
