The unity braid ceremony can be combined with the love letter ceremony. Attach the completed unity braid on a piece of wood that measures the size of the top of the love letter box. When the love letter ceremony is complete use the unity braid wood as the lid to seal the love letter box.
The sand unity ceremony can be combined with the candle unity ceremony to add that unique touch
These unity ceremony are special in their own way, however the beauty with these ceremony they can be combined to make each unity ceremony unique to each couples desire. Here are a couple of combination to consider.
Canvas Painting Ceremony
This unity ceremony is more for the artistic couples out there. Creating a piece of art that you and your partner can treasure forever by painting on a piece of canvas .It symbolizes “two becoming one” by each using a different colour of paint that, when combined, make a new colour. By the end of your wedding ceremony you’ll have a lovely keepsake of your special day.
NB: If you choose this option consider decorated the canvas with your names, wedding date or monogram for a more personalized touch.
Unity Braid Ceremony
The Unity Braid Ceremony symbolizes the joining of one man, one woman, and God into a marriage relationship. The cord with three strands are braided together by the groom holding a small metal ring with three attached strands, then the bride braids the strands together, symbolizing the union of God, husband and wife.
Handfasting ceremony
One of the oldest of these alternative unity ceremony ideas, and particularly known in Pagan wedding ceremonies, handfasting is the joining of the bride and groom’s hands and wrists using vines, cord, rope, or ribbon tied into a knot. It’s often said that this is where we get the expression “tying the knot” from, and it often takes place at the end of the wedding ceremony as a final promise from one person to the other to bind their lives together.
The material should probably be significant to you—for example, a strip of cloth from the dress you wore for your first date with your husband- or wife-to-be. Think carefully about what kind of knot you wish to tie your hands into. Each can carry a different meaning, and so, symbolically, one may suit you and your partner better than the others. Some types of knots include Infinity Knots, Fisherman’s Knots, and Trinity Knots.
NB:
Infinity Knot - This is a meaning that has ritualized from India and Tibet, where the symbol represented perfection and equilibrium between the male and female gender it also symbols complete loops that have no start or finish that represents eternity whether this means loyalty, faith, friendship or love. Only one thread is used in each design which symbolizes how life and eternity are interconnected.
Fisherman Knot - represents two lives now joining into one. It's performed by the couple each taking a piece of rope and intertwining the two pieces of rope together forming them into a fisherman's knot which is the strongest of all knots and won't come undone if pulled. This is meant to represent the couple's strength under pressure and to show that they'll always be one and nobody can come in between them and pull them apart!
Trinity Knot - This knot is similar to the infinity knot it symbolizes eternal love as the couple entwined as one.
Plant Unity Ceremony
Here is an alternative to the tree planing ceremony. The concept remains the same, however instead of planting a tree the couple plants a plant.
Tree Planting Ceremony
Planting a tree is a beautiful wedding idea as it can symbolize the growth of your relationship. Together you can see the tree grow just as your love and married life does, and you must nurture it in order to keep it alive. So you gather two pots of dirt, possibly from a special, significant place, and plant a tree in the combined soil. Water it together with two watering cans (again, perhaps with water from a meaningful place), or even one shared watering can. You might even want to include your guests or immediate family and friends—ask them to add their own scatters of soil or seeds. This is definitely one of the the most symbolic alternative unity ceremony ideas!
NB:Make the ceremony even more symbolic by choosing the tree due to its meaning—look in mythology or even use a cutting from a tree that’s special to you. You could even plant a tree each if you want to, and twist them together as they grow.
Rose Unity Ceremony
The rose has always been the flower most associated with love, and the rose ceremony incorporates this to symbolize the couple’s love for one another, and the joining in love of two families. The couple share two roses, and choose any number of family members they wish to take part, with one rose given to each.
To perform the rose ceremony, the couple set up three vases – one large central one, and two smaller ones on each side. The bride and groom hold one rose each of a chosen colour, usually red, and also give a single rose to the members of the family who will take part. The family roses can be of the same colour as the couple’s or different.
At an agreed point during the ceremony, the couple place their roses one in each of the smaller side vases. The family members then approach one by one and place their roses into the central vase. This symbolizes the families of the bride and groom joining together. The bride and groom then take their individual roses and exchange them as their “first gift” to each other. They then place the roses in the central vase, to symbolize joining of their newly created marriage to their families.
NB: Any flower can be used it do not have to be a rose
Unity Candle Ceremony
The meaning behind the ceremony is the merging flames will show the couple's unity and strengthened love and shared lives.
This ceremony can be done varies ways and can include different members of the family, The couple each has a candle, and there is a third, main one between them. This main candle can be lit by the father of the bride, (or by all of the couple’s parents at the same time) and then the couple light their own candles from it. If the first option is not done then the rest of the family can light their candles from the main candle afterwards.
Alternatively, perhaps the couple could light each other’s candles, and together they light the main one that the rest of the family can light theirs from).
Or alternatively, the priest can light the main candle which then, the couple can light their separate candles together symbolizing unity in lighting each other path.
NB: The only downside to this ceremony is that it might not work very well outside.
Love Letter & wine box ceremony.
This unity ceremony combines two aspects together love letters and wine. The wooden box symbolizes one common holding ground for these two separate entities which binds them together in one place. The box will contain love letters that they have written to each other, a bottle of wine and two wine glasses. These letters represent the bride and groom and expresses their thoughts on today their wedding day, details about the good qualities that they have found in each other and includes the reasons why they fell in love with one another.
Should you ever find your marriage enduring serious difficulties, you agree that before you make any irrational decisions, that you both as a couple will open the box, drink the bottle of wine together, and then venture off into separate areas to read the letters that you would have written to one another when you were united as husband and wife. By reading these love letters, you will be given an opportunity to reflect upon the reasons that you fell in love with each other in the first place.
Of course, the hope is that there will be no reason the box to be opened. If that is the case the box can be open on a milestone anniversary like on your 5th wedding anniversary! Afterwards you can compose another love letter to one another describing your last 5 years together and place it along with a fresh bottle of wine to enjoy on your 10th wedding anniversary and then each subsequent 5 year anniversary thereafter.
Wine Unity Ceremony
The wine ceremony, again, shows the merging of two into one by two wines being blended into one (possibly red wine and white wine). The couple drinks from the shared container, this sharing of a cup is symbolic of togetherness.
Water Unity Ceremony
A lot like the sand ceremony the water ceremony has the same meaning, this ceremony blends two colours into one.
(NB: Experiment with colours before the wedding so that the end colour given is something you really like. Unlike with the sand ceremony, where you get clear layers and blended layers, water really mixes together.)
Sand Unity Ceremony
Its meaning is simple and beautiful: two becoming one. By mixing two different colours of sand into one container symbolizing their lives and hearts entwined. Once combined, it would be extremely difficult to separate the sand out again, just as the couple are so joined together.
