Missing People - Why there are no Amerindians in our story.

On occasion we have patrons who question the exemption of the Arawaks from our production. They were indeed a people on this island, but their culture had no real impact on what we became as a people because at the time of European settlement, Barbados was uninhabited.

The Taino/Barrancoid/Arawak people were the first tribe to arrive on the shores of Barbados. They lived on the island between the start of the Christian era and ended sometime in 600AD.

This group of people commonly referred to as Arawaks and more recently as Taino, were considered to be great navigators and it is no surprise that they were able to make full usage of their long, narrow flat bottomed canoes to make their way to Barbados. The island became an attraction for them as they found it had beautiful beaches and arable lands. They named this land Ichirouganaim; ‘red land with white teeth’. In reference to the red clay soil of the Barbadian Scotland District and the many coral reefs along the coast.

A peaceful and skilled people, they farmed the land using a method now known as slash and burn, and grew crops mainly of corn, cassava and tabacco. They were also very skilled in the making of clay bowls and pots. With these items and their produce, they were able to trade with neighbouring islands.

Enter the Caribs, known also as the Kalinago.

Caribs weren't as peaceful as the Arawaks and it reflected in their very lifestyles. Unlike the Arawaks, who farmed a lot and even entertained themselves with games, the Caribs were not much into agriculture nor games but more focused on a protein rich diet that included sea food and the Arawaks. This practice is deemed to be a major reason for the lack of Taino settlements on Barbados at the arrival of the British. Despite the harsh and cannibalistic attitudes of the Caribs, it is said that the Spaniards were somehow able to annihilate every last Arawak on the island.

Many sites have been found of the remains of Arawak villages, scholars have come from far and wide to study the remains of a culture that had virtually vanished before our English colonisers arrived.

So come away with us, back in time then into the present. Take a journey with us through the sounds of our culture as we celebrate our rhythms!

Stick fighting is a Barbadian Martial Art! Yes Martial Art, in fact the art of the Stick Fight much like many of our inherited traditions came over with the slaves. A man's ability to wield a stick gave him prominence in daily village life.
Celebrations of Rhythms celebrates these traditions - it is the story of who we are and where we came from in Dance and Song!
For visitors to our island, it is a glimpse into our world, for locals it is a CELEBRATION!!!!
