Calling all GPs...there is a proven dietary approach to potentially put into remission the dietary disease that is type 2 diabetes. It’s reassuring to see that low carb is now an acceptable, indeed desirable, option for patients with metabolic disorders. Thank you to co-author Dr Liz Fraser and to Australian Doctor for publishing this important piece. Read more on page 10...

Back to school madness.
What a way to start the school day... ultra-processed sugary delights for recess and lunch on top of a glass of sugary juice and cereal for breakfast. Blood sugar levels are going crazy. Why are our kids going crazy...?!

The quality of our food, especially in our older population, is paramount.

The quality of our food, especially in our older population, is paramount.

It was a treat to interview legendary chef Maggie Beer from Maggie Beer Foundation at the Showcase SA lunch this week. She shared her concerns regarding the poor diet being served in aged care facilities in Australia and the rise of dementia in our society.

It works!
The latest systematic review showing that type 2 diabetes can be put into remission with a low carb diet, co-authored by CSIRO’s Nutrition & Health Professor Grant Brinkworth.
Surely it’s time that remission becomes a major goal in every country’s National Diabetes Strategy?
Our Governments need to supplement type 2 diabetes management with a number of strategies to ensure patients can adhere to a low-carb low-sugar dietary approach:
• provide health practitioners with the training, resources and funding to be able to educate and support their patients
• provide every patient with diabetes with a CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) device to allow them to understand the impact of various foods on their blood glucose level
• provide subsidies for real food in poorer socioeconomic areas and for people with diabetes
• provide a clear and transparent labeling system indicating the amount of added sugar in our food and drinks
• ban predatory sales and marketing tactics utilized by businesses and industry
• ban ads and TV commercials for sugary products aimed at our kids
• launch a comprehensive public campaign to raise awareness in kids and adults of the dangers of ultra processed foods and the complications and reversible nature of diabetes.
We might then start to see a downturn in our type 2 diabetes epidemic...

Your eyes and skin are your solar panels. If you charge them correctly, they will power your entire body.

When we talk about benefits of sunlight, we think vitamin D, but the nuances and role that the sun plays in the human body goes far further.

Your solar panels are you your skin and eyes. When you expose skin to middle day sun, we convert vitamin D. It’s also the sunlight that can burn if you expose too much.

SUNRISE is a different type of light.

All sunlight is 42% infrared light. Infrared light stimulates collagen, increases bone healing and heals wounds. So, sunrise is great for your gums and teeth.

Sunrise contains little to no UV, so expose as much skin to the morning sun as you can.

This type of infrared light is also anti-ageing; it reduces wrinkles and scars. That’s not what you usually hear about sunlight is it!

Infrared light, along with cellular water, is crucial when it comes to charging your body and creating energy.

The benefits of morning sun play a critical role as to how we utilize sunrays found in light over the day. Infrared light around sunrise preconditions our skin to protect us from the UVA and UVB that comes out a bit later.

Catch enough infrared light early in the morning and you’re less likely to burn later in the day.

Then around 10am, UVA raises its head a little bit later in the morning. It is critical in making Nitric Oxide (the substance we release from the nasal sinuse and exercise). Nitric oxide drastically increases mitochondrial energy, your memory, and it’s anti-aging.

UVA light also triggers the production of serotonin and dopamine and releases endorphins along with a small opiate effect. The end result? You feel good.

So if there’s one health recommendation I can make. Get up with the sunrise, watch it and expose your eyes, skin, and brain to the benefits of sunlight.

Did you know the benefits of morning sun? Anyone catch the sunrise today?

Fascinating study looking at ferritin (stored Iron) concentrations in babies who had experienced either early cord clamping (less than 10 seconds) and delayed cord clamping (over 180 seconds).

Delayed cord clamping at birth in full term low risk pregnancies resulted in improved iron status (ferritin concentration was 45% higher in delayed cord clamping group!), a reduced prevalence of iron deficiency at 4 months of age, and a reduced prevalence of neonatal anaemia.

Given the seriousness of Iron deficiency with or without anaemia, these are amazing findings. What a difference a few minutes can make. Full paper here https://www.bmj.com/content/bmj/343/bmj.d7157.full.pdf

The more and more science that comes out the more we will find that our governments are not following the science. Also a US study the other day showed a higher infection rate in people that wear masks compare with to those that don't. Go figure.

A Scary Amount of Nutrition Science Has Deep Ties to The Food Industry, Study Reveals

“The food industry has their fingers all over our nutrition research. According to a new analysis, one out of every eight leading, peer-reviewed studies on nutrition is tied to business. Even worse, this conflict of interest... tends to produce results that favour business, and potentially with misleading consequences.”
Carly Cassella, Science Alert, Dec 2020 https://www-sciencealert-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.sciencealert.com/nutrition-studies-tied-to-food-industry-are-6-times-more-likely-to-report-favourable-results/amp
Let’s hope we can keep industry vested interests out of the upcoming review of our Australian Dietary Guidelines.

Sugar is the bad guy.
A recent study concluded...
“A high proportion of ultra-processed food in the diet was associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, partly through its high dietary content of sugar.”
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33333551/
With nearly half of Milo powder being sugar, it’s a good thing that its flawed 4.5 star rating was removed. For the sake of transparency, this ultra-processed favorite should display a 1.5 star rating. Beware what you’re feeding your kids...
